Fat Ankles - Water Retention?

Help! Yesterday afternoon my ankles starting swelling and are now rather huge (for nearly 24 hours now!). I went to the pharmasist as I've never had this problem before (even during my pregnancies) and she said it was likely to be water retention but I would have to go to my doctor for proper diagnosis. As my doctor usually takes about a week to get an appointment, I'm not going to bother to go as I would hope they had gone down by then, but I was wondering if any other SW'ers out there had had a similar problem?

I am drinking enough water as I've always been a huge lover of water and have a bottle next to my desk at work each day, so I don't think it is that.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Could you try some aqua ban (water retention tablets), that might help

Thanks Lucylupin - I'll give them a try - I keep hoping that when I do a wee my ankles will go down!

It's really better to get the doc to have a look at them - it could well just be water retention (drink lots of water as the more water you take on board, the more you lose) but it can also be a sign of the start of heart problems (don't mean to scare you!!!). Best to get a correct diagnosis to reassure you.

So yeah, try the water retention tablets but it could be that you need Furosemide or similar prescription if it doesn't get better.

It's highly unlikely to be the start of cardiac failure. Think horses not zerbras :D

I get fat ankles sometimes and its anything from TOTM, the socks I'm wearing to just "one of those things", heat, so try not to panic. I've not dropped dead yet

Keep your feet raised up when you can when you sit down to watch TV at night. Drink adequate water (about 2L a day) and try to avoid highly salted foods.

Don't panic but make a wee appointment for the doctor just to rule out anything else it could be, and in the meantime keep the feet up.

It best to speak to a professional who can give you an accurate diagnosis as there many be several reasons to why this might be happening. The last tim I had water retention was through a kidney illness and my kidney's were not working properly!
