Mirena implant

Does anyone have it/had it? My doc has suggested it as my periods are terrible very heavy & painful & I get a week of terrible pain before I even get a period. I've had all sorts of tests & scans & there is nothing showing. On a previous trip to the doc (male) I was told that I was having these problems because I had chosen to delay child bearing (I’m only just 34 & have had these problems on & off since I was 14 )

Anyway I saw a different doc (female) & she has suggested I have a hormone test firstly & then consider the implant. I am worried that playing with my body will affect my chances of conceiving later as we hope to try for a baby sometime next year. I have been on the pill & had to come off as I get migraines & have had the injection as well.

Any advice very welcome

I have the mirena coil fitted and find it great. I, like you used to have really heavy & painful periods and the pill didn't agree with me. I am 33 btw. Anyway I now only have occasional "spotting" and not even every month. I can get on with my life without worrying about period pains every month. I do find I have a gain or sts when it is around the time I would be due on so must still retain some water.

From what I know about mirena with regard to trying for a child I think it takes a couple of months for things to get back to normal once you have it removed but I am now on my 2nd mirena, they last for around 5 years and due to medication am unable to have more children but have a 10 year old son.

With regard to the male doc saying your probs were due to delaying childbirth my periods were as bad after I had my son as they were before.

Oooh I hope mine works as well as you other ladies. I had the mirena coil fitted last week after about 2 years of month long periods so heavy I couldn't leave the house and that made me anaemic. Not fun is it! I hope I'm one of those that has no periods at all soon.:D

I don't think it will effect your chances of having a baby. Is the implant different to the coil? I think once the coil's removed things go back to normal pretty quickly. Good luck, hope everything gets sorted.:)

will you let me know how you get on as I'm not going to have it done if I do for another couple of months as have to have a hormone test first?

Yep no problem, I'll let you know what happens. The doc said to expect 3-6 months of spotting/periods but she said some don't have anything at all. After the first 6 months she said it calms down and leaves lots of women with no period at all.:D So far I've had a period at the normal time but much lighter.:)

i have mine in about 4 yrs now and have my period bang on every 28 days,,have no pains or aches just sore calves about a week before:)

I had one fitted back in early April and haven't bled at all, not even a spot. Have a day or two of PMT but that's it. My GP just wanted me off the pill as I'm almost 40 (on Monday) and apart from coming off to have my daughter I've been on it since I was 16.

I had the implant after having my son 6 years ago and unfortunately it didnt agree with me :( It made my hormones crazy and I ended up with a bad spell of depression, as there was far too much hormone release in it for me. I had it removed after 4 months, although they do ask you wait 6 months to see if it settles, but I was adamant that it was coming out, whether they did it or not lol :p

I went back on the pill but have just recently had the coil fitted from advice from my GP. I am only 31 but was having some problems. This was fitted 6 weeks ago and I've only had one spell of bleeding, that lasted 3 days, and spotting for another 2. It seems to be agreeing with me so far, although its the same hormone release thats in the implant, but a much smaller dose.

I think that everyone is different, and whats good for one person, might not be for another.

Good luck with whatever you choose :) x

I have had my mirena for 3 years now and I love it. I too suffer from fairly heavy periods and had the regular coil before having my youngest and it was horrendous. I have never had periods that heavy in my life so had to have ot removed.

Before having this one in, I read up on it and from what I have read, your body can go back to normal almost straight away because it only produces a small amount of hormone so it doesn't take ages to leave your system. It took 3months for me to ovulate after stopping the pill so didn't want to go down that route again.

Let us know what you decide :)

I've had a Mirena for about 15 years... it's fab once it's in (no periods whatsoever here) and it has been very very good for my PMT, which used to be absolutely awful (I would get very very depressed, almost suicidal around that time of the month).

Only thing is, as I haven't had children, and have a retroverted uterus (tilted), it is excruciatingly painful to have it fitted. I had it done once, nearly passed out, and now have it replaced under a general anaesthetic, which they are happy to do due to my weird anatomy.

The one and only time I've had problems is when my current one was changed - I'd left the last one way way past its sell by date, and as a result when the new one was put it in played havoc with my hormones for about 3 weeks (hideous spots, wrinkles, sore boobs, tearfulness, the lot)... but it soon passed and now its great again.

I have one - in fact, am just about to get it changed after having it for 5 years. I can honestly say it's been great - I've not had a period for 5 years, just the occasional pre-period heavy stomach feeling and a little spotting. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Also, although I've had a child, it was by caesarian, so they did say it might be very painful to fit, but I found it no worse than having a cervical smear to be honest!

Unfortunately the Mirena coil didn't work for me at all. They did a scan of my uterus and I had a lot of large fibroids (size of watermelons!) which were causing the impossibly heavy, painful periods. In the end I had to have a hysterectomy. A bit drastic I know but I'd have it done all over again just to be free of those awful periods. Hopefully you'll have luck with the Mirena. X

I've got an implant and the first few months on it were really good but I've been bleeding on it for about a month now. The Doc said that you either dont bleed, have regular periods or just have them all the time! I got stuck with the latter. Great. Obviously it's a bit of an inconvenience so I'm going to have to have a word with the doc. Not ideal!
