Been dieting for around 3 weeks, eating low calories still and healthy meals, exercising every night and absolutely no change at all, not even a pound, starting to feel like i should give up :(

Dont give up, you might just be eating a little more than you realise. Keep a food diary on here and be totally honest! And its great that you are doing excercise too, so essential that you keep that up. It will soon start to move, promise!

I agree with lynn, it could be something to do with portions, or you could be eating more than you realise. A food diary really helps, even if it's just in a notepad for yourself. I didn't realise how much I ate until I started writing down every single thing. Also, on weeks I sts or weeks where I barely lose anything if I look at my diary I tend to realise that the amount I've been eating has been creeping up gradually.
I hoep that you see results soon. Don't give up!

thanks girls, i keep a food diary everyday and my calories never go over 1200 as thats what my doctor recommended i ate to loose the weight, unfortunately i was also told i have bad genes, my grandmother was on a very successful weight loss programme, and only lost half a stone in 18 months, to her doctors astonishment, i was wondering if anybody had any tips to boost weight loss?

Hi Jade

Are you exercising as well? Are you drinking at least 2l of water every day? What's your carb intake like?

ETA: Might help if you put up a typical day of what you eat xxx

Sometimes a change to your routine can boost weightloss. For example one week having set 3 meals a day plus healthy snack, and the next week not having 3 set meals, but upto 6 snack size portions. If you are exercising make sure you don't overdo it, as you will at some point be building muscle mass. Good luck x

thanks for the tip! going back to the doctors tomorrow for some more tests as they may think i have an underlying issue which is stopping me from loosing weight so hopefully the results will shed some light!

im drinking a ton of water (not literally hehe) , to be honest i haven't been checking the carbs in my meals, is that a fatal mistake on my behalf? im not too wise on carbs only on fats and calories so my meals are always low in salt, fat and calories but i never looked to check the carbs, would a low cal high carb diet be doing me no favours? the carbs aren't too high compared to how many you are allowed in a day, probably i have around half of what your supposed too

Jade xoxo

Sometimes having too many carbs can restrict your weight loss, because some can be high in sugar or contain too much energy which causes fat loss to slow right down, from what I am aware of. If you like to have pasta for example, it might help to switch to wholewheat, if you like having bread, switch to wholemeal bread. Also I think it's best to get most of your carbs in the first half of the day, which is why most diet plans have an evening meal of just meat and vegetables, without potatoes. x

I'm biased because I'm low carbing, so I would say try and have a low carb regime. But most diets work in their own individual way.

Hey, hope it went ok at the drs.
Best wishes for the week ahead.

hey thanks for all the help! couldn't make it to the doctors today unfortunately, hopefully some time this week.

i measured my hips today and i was 42-43 im now 40
my waist used to be 34-35 and i am now 32-33
my stomach was 40 now im 39
so either today i am having a slimmer day or i have lost a inch or so of my body i will remeasure in a weeks time and see if its the same or less or worst case more!

still seems like nothing after the pain i have put myself through in a month, the exercising nearly killed me! i think i am just used to loosing weight really fast on silly fad diets, which is why im struggling with this type of weight loss programme as i understand it isn't a fast option.

yesterday was a bad day, felt really rubbish after seeing everyone doing so great loosing pounds and im having generally a fat week, ate quite a bit yesterday regretting it all now,
- two shredded wheat for breakfast,
- one packet of snack a jacks,
- two pieces of plain toast,
- tikka masala for dinner (special low calorie diet one, only 300 cals and 2g of fat)
- ice lolly for dessert which had 60 calories 0g of fat,
-ryveta style cracker 30 cal with extra light Philadelphia which has 30 calories per 30g used.

instead of cardio for the last 3 days i haven't done any, i am house sitting at the mo so cant use what i usually do (my personal trainer on the wii) so instead i have been doing 200-300 sit ups a night and weight lifting to try banish the bingo wings!

Well there can be no doubt you are losing something lol, the inch loss proves that, and with all the excercise you are doing then you are going to be building some muscle.

Carbs could be the problem though. Its all very complex how the body stores fat and how you lose weight, but insulin production can be at the root of a slow weight loss. If you eat a diet high in carbs (which can still equate to low in calories) your body responds quickly by producing insulin. It then converts the carbs into glucose which is stored in the fat cells. If you eat a low carb diet you do not get the spikes of insulin. A diet high in protein and low in carb will produce a much smoother flow of insulin into the body, and will encourage your body to burn fat rather than use the glycogen.

Without seeing what your normal diet days food is, its hard to see if oyu are overdoing the carbs, but certainly on your 'off day' carbs were very present.

It may be worth taking a week or even 3 days on a no carb, or as low as you can manage to see if this helps with the weight loss. Be careful to choose foods like lean chicken and meat and lots of salad, and avoid any carbohydrate (bread potato pasta cereal sugar, any starchy vegetables) avoid fat if you can, a little bit of oil and vinegar salad dressing should be ok, but no salad dressing that is sweetened. Dont let yourself get hungry, eat more lean meat and salad if you are, and drink drink drink water. Lots of water is very important. Im pretty sure you will be pleased with the results even in 3 days.

Do expect some headaches though, so have some paracetamol handy, a sudden change to a low carb diet will definately trigger a few headaches, but this will pass after a few days when your body adjusts.

wow thanks that was really helpful! i think my carbs are defiantly too high, i had a check on the foods i brought that were low calories and most are around 28g of carbs in each dinner :-( silly me, spent lots of money on it all too as a student this is costing me a bomb! im going to eat the rest of what i brought as i cant go to see it being wasted, but will probably just limit what else i eat during the day till i buy the new low carbs low calories food and i will keep you all updated on that! i am trying to stay motivated and seeing it as i may not be loosing pounds at the moment, but defiantly i am eating better so im sure my insides are much healthier hehe :)

You are absolutely right that most, if not all of the low calorie meals on sale are full of carbs. I searched my local Tesco recently looking for some low cal meals that didnt contain either potata pasta or rice (which reminds me, i forgot to put no rice on your post). There simply wasnt any. Carb in itself is not that high in calorie value, so is a good filler for the food manufacturers to include in these low calorie meals, but the effect on your insulin is still dramatic.

Getting a low carb meal together yourself does not need a lot of preparation and can be just as cheap, if not cheaper than the ready meals. A grilled chicken breast and a plate of salad is a pretty simple meal to prepare and should cost less than £2.

I hear what you are saying about having bought ready meals in already, so use the next few days while you use those up to investigate what you can eat low carb, and keep us updated on what you decide.

Good luck! and good weight loss :)

yep! diaster, no wonder i wasn't loosing the weight i wanted :-( ah well, learning from mistakes could be a lot worse i suppose and spent lots of money on useless dietpills rather than readymeals hehe.
seeing as your great at giving advice, how many carbs would you say someone should consume to loose weight? im on 1000 calories usually a day as i am pretty full up, trying to increase that to 1200,
say i was on 1000 a day though, would 100g carbs be ok?

100g is way too much, to get started you should aim for no more than 20g max a day at least for the first week, then gradually increase that to around 35g a day. Then its a matter of trial and error. If your weight loss slows down reduce the amount of carb, and dont worry about counting calories on a low carb diet, you will naturally reduce your calorie intake, but its important not to get hungry. Do expect to get carb cravings initially though, its your bodys way of objecting to being made to lose weight lol.

Well I think I'll be taking Lynn's advice, lol.
Hope that everything's going well. That inch loss is great, keep it up!
Best wishes.
