SW and iron (ferritin) levels

I went to see my GP last week because I've had a strange rash on my feet for a long while now. I had to have blood tests and the results have come back showing that I have very high levels of ferritin in my blood. I have to have the test repeated in a few weeks and if it's the same/worse she's going to refer me to hospital for further tests on my immune system as apparently a high level of iron is very harmful and can be a sign of some underlying disease. It's scared the life out of me and I'm worrying myself sick.
After thinking about it a lot, I'm wondering whether the SW diet could be contributing to my high ferritin levels. I now eat a lot of vegetables (including dark green ones), loads of eggs, wholegrain rice, beans/pulses and lean meat etc which all contain lots of iron. I am probably eating a lot more iron than I did pre-slimming world. I was wondering whether anyone else has noticed a link between SW and their ferritin levels?
Think I'm clutching at straws really as my GP told me it would be very difficult to eat enough iron to get levels raised like mine but thought it was worth asking!!

sorry to hear you havent been well hun :( i hope you get everything sorted out soon xx

when i read the title of your thread i thought you were going to say that you had low levels of iron, as thats what i think i have  i used to be aneamic (sp?) a few years ago and ive had all the same symptoms again recently so i was blaming it on that, when its probably not the case at all! are you eating a lot more red meat than before? xx

I haven't sorry hun, but wanted to say that hope all goes well with your next tests.

I would mention it to the dr next time as it is always a possiblity I guess. x x

No I don't eat anymore red meat than I did. In fact probably less. Usually do mainly green days with a few extra easy each week. I will mention sw to the dr when I go back.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.:( I thought you were going to say your iron levels were low from the title. I found out recently that mine are very low which I found very surprising because of the amount of good iron rich food I've been eating on plan. So sorry, I can't help ease your mind but hope it's sorted out soon.

It is, as your GP said difficult to eat that much iron from your diet, BUT difficult is not the same as impossible. So don't panic.

Wait for your referral/repeat tests and try not to worry too much, as one thing that's guaranteed to hammer your immune system is stress/worry. There are a multitude of reasons that your ferritin could be high and not all of them are listed on the internet or WebMD.

I'm not a doctor, so I dont know what they could be, but please rest assured if it was deadly serious they wouldn't have sent you home to be at home. They obviously think that they have time to retest etc, so please try not to worry too much (although that's always easy for other people to say )

hi mel
i've not posted before but have been reading for a while.
i know someone with this problem and they have been diagnosed with Haemochromatosis.
it is basically iron overload in the body.
the person i know has to give a pint of blood a month and this keeps it under control with no other concerns.
this can be hereditary as far as i understand .
i hope this helps rather than scares you xxx

Hi Mel just read your post, sorry I have no helpful advise but just wanted to say please try not to worry (although this will be rather difficult) and hope every thing goes OK for you. Let us know how you are and here's an extra big hug :hug99: xxx

Thanks Lou. My GP explained this to me. It is either hereditory (and I'm sure no-one in my family has had anything like it) or it's caused by some thing else like diseases of the immune system/cancer. I'm rather hoping that someone in my family comes out of the woodwork and admits to having it as the other reasons for it aren't too good!!!!

Thank everyone - I'll let you know how I get on :O)..... Fingers crossed eh?
