Aldi

Hi guys i have been shopping recently at Aldi and i am surprised how cheap and great the food tastes.

Last week i put my food shopping online before going to Aldi to compare prices and the cheapest was Sainsbury's at £96.

I then did my shop at Aldi and spent £65 all the same foods just there makes not brands.

So i got to thinking what things were good for SW at aldi and thought we could make a list.

Frozen Lamb Shanks in mint gravy - 3.5 syns each really yummy.

Aldi Crisps snacks (salt and vinegar sticks, onion rings, frazzles, cheese puffs) - 4.5 syns

Please add what you have found

I bought vegetables from Aldi last week, with mixed results. One of the lettuces was fine, the other was bitter. The celery was pretty tasteless. Peppers and butternut squash and cucumber were fine. The potatoes were OK, but not very good quality and I had to cut quite a bit out of them, making them not such a bargain after all.

I always get my parmesan cheese there - it is good value and a block lasts for ever in my cheese box in the fridge.

I don't buy frozen food as I don't have a freezer, so can't comment. I did see some crisps which looked quite nice, but I could only find them in packs of mixed flavours. I only like plain crisps, so it would have been a waste.

What are the Lamb shanks like how big was a bit let down by the ASDA one I picked up

Lots of meat on them, my dad and brother who are normally big meat eaters were totally satisfied and i shared mine with the dog when i couldnt eat anymore.

I am a big aldi fan, i think there fruit and veg is like fruit and veg you get off a market stall you have to look carefully. Have never had trouble with their potatoes.

I buy lots of their frozen fish (tuna, smoked coley, salmon, trying sardines tonight)

Thier lean mince is truly mean and i use it and drain it well (i know it is supposed to be extra lean)

Chickens are cheap and tasty

Frozen Lamb joints are easy to trim visible extra fat off and yummy.

Frozen fruit is excellent.

Tinned tomatoes and passatta, cheap and excellent as are their big bags of pasta.

Their bacon is very lean (again you need to check the packs as some are better than others) But a double pack is 2.49.

gammon steaks

smoked salmon

and my absolutley favourite SW thing is their reduced fat mature cheese it is the BEST and 42 g for a hea.

Oh a couple more

frozen medditeranean roasted veg are free and although you have to be careful how you cook them (strangely stir fry is better than roasting)

their broc, cauli and carrot mix is a staple in our house as the carrots are baby carrots not sliced ones.

I had some sweet potatoes from Aldi and forgot about them - found them yesterday almost two weeks later and they were fine. Made some sweet potato chips in the Actifry - lovely!

At Aldi

Worldwide Foods

Couscous (Thai style curry flavour)

According to my directory (2009) this is free on green.

Utterly gorgeous.

You could also stir in some chick peas to bulk it out.

Are any of their other couscous free? Am spending a fortune on Ainsley!

I buy this too and look for the smallest rind possible and then just cut off the "tail" as I call it. For that much cheaper than big supermarlet extra trimmed bacon, you're still saving overall.

(My daughter gets the "tail" all cut up small in her sandwich!)

I'm going to Aldi today to do my shopping - a little out of my comfort zone (as in, I know what I can and can't have at Asda!) so I'm a bit worried! Got some good ideas from this thread, so thanks guys. Wish I knew more stuff that's good on Green!
