Weights and high resistance exercise

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me?
Im nine lbs off target and I have been doing low res exercise but I wondered when the best time to 'up' it would be? I would like to use dumbbells (just 5kg) to tone up my arms and use the high resistance on my stepper.
Do you think i might just bulk up and gain muscle weight or will it help me?
If I gain I do go on a bit of a downer even if I know it might be exercise related!!!!!

No, you'll be fine :)

To gain muscle weight, you really need to be eating lots more calories. As you are still trying to lose a few pounds, you will be in calorie defecit, so you won't actually build your muscles too much.

Increasing the resistance will just make the exercise harder, might increase the strength of your muscles a bit, but will mainly work your cardiovascular system harder, meaning more calories burned and you getting fitter.

thanks so much :D
