I was absolutely delighted to hear two young people on Junior Apprentice tonight talking about their advertising slogan and rubbishing the use of textspeak (as in GR8). Apparently they thought it was something that people in Year 4 might do, but so not cool!

Wonderful. If it is going out of fashion with young people, then maybe other people will stop using it too, and I might just get to understand what they are on about!

Now if I can only stop people saying "like" every other word, and also get them to say "railway station" instead of "train station", I will be really happy! :bliss:
 
I detest text speak!! I was reading a post elsewhere on Minimins which was all in text speak and seriously it must have taken longer to work out the text speak than to do it properly.

I wont even read posts like that, its just pure laziness
 
Must say that I agree, I've even been known to add people to my ignore lists just because the messages are so difficult to read. I must be becoming a grumpy old lady because the other thing that drives me nuts is lack of punctuation...being faced with a whole paragraph with no full stops, capital letters or commas. It's a shame really because people may not get the answers or help they are after just because it is so off-putting :(
 
I really don't like text speak, in a text it's just about passable (my normally very articulate daughter uses it in a text) but in an email or post on a forum I can't abide it.

Here here to the death of text speak.
 
some people who are dislexic etc use it quite alot as it's easier for them to get their words out same with apostrphes I have no clue even at 24 where they go.

but if someone is able to type correctly then i guess it is lazyness x
 
When on the internet or texting I tend to use "some" textspeak like "u" or "wot" and "ur" but it depends on where I am. Places like Facebook where it's very common I use it more but somewhere like Minimins it may sneak in out of habit but I do try to keep it in check.

I agree with what's (<---- notice it's not WOT!! LOL) been said previously about lack of punctuation, but also what drives me crazy is bad spelling in general!! It takes TWO seconds to proof read what's written before hitting the submit button...grrrr!

OK...and ...... BREATHE!!!!

I don't read them any more either - I just assume that the person doesn't really care that he or she is not communicating with a significant number of people here and therefore won't be expecting as many answers as they might have got, and doesn't mind missing out.

I do get the point about dyslexia - hadn't thought of that so sorry if I have offended anyone.

I saw a message here recently where someone had written "2moro" in one line and "tomorrow" in the next, so that person could spell if they could be bothered!

And I do agree about the lack of punctuation. I read a message here recently which could have meant two totally different things depending on where the punctuation should have been. As it wasn't there, I had no idea what was intended.

Oh, and another thing. What is all this "lol" business? I understand it means "laugh out loud"? If so, there are a lot of people out there laughing out loud at some pretty odd things!

And yes, I probably am boring, pedantic and grumpy. Don't care!! :)
 
Theres alot of people who really struggle with spelling and have tried to improve it but still struggle these people generally use different words to get there point across sometimes its text speak.
Some people can't see if a word is spelt right or wrong.
The sites with spell check can be useful. But I guess not to the people who can't see the mistakes.
This is not said in angry by the way just wanted to add a another view in.
I know we all have things that bug us and I guess its ok to show them as long as we don't offend people in the process.

that tomorrow thing might be me hahaha! I tend to type as quickly as I can getting what I want to say out before one of children need me and come back to find I can't remember what I was typing. :8855:
Also if people are like me sometimes I say things that could be taken bad but arnt so i tend to type lol at end so people know i'm half joking and I have a sence of humour.
but yes you are right, with me myself i don't use punctuation where is needed i type alot in text I don't tend to do capitol letters where there needed either and yes it's all lazyness and quickness of writing!
Mainly I wasn't clever at all at school (home tutor) and she used shout at me all time putting full stops and capitol letters and everything else in wrong places, so when I left school I didn't tend to write as was scared being wrong then of course texting alot so never used them ans when I came on forum I just typed away I never really thought about all spelling mistakes and text talk etc til read this.

Anyhow I'm sure there's more lazy people like me out there lol.

LOL... i'm a lazy text talk writer and i'm not affended by this. So blow your head off. I can see why correctly typing people might get really annoyed as I can't read many of my own messeges I do try! anyway might be good weight loss stratadgy << can't spell! keeping all that steam locked up in there won't do you any good! haha

:8855: i dont mind the spelling probs so much as long as i can see what it means but some of the text poop doesn't even make sense with out some sort of 'text dictionary'!!!
 
I'm not anti-text speak. I think, one of the most beautiful things about the English language is that it can't be contained, it morphs, it adapts. Language can be used in different ways, in different settings. Quite often, even in spoken English, instead of saying tomorrow, I say tomoz. It’s a little colloquialism and I’ll carry that into my written English. On a forum, I’ll often type as I talk. I feel that you can use informal language in a forum setting.

An of course you have the now famous internet meme that sugests ....

I know that poor spelling and grammar can irritate some people, but personally, I'd rather spend a little more time decoding what people wrote, than critique their spelling and grammar (unless I was asked). There are lots of reasons why people struggle with spelling, and it can be very off putting to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard if you think you'll be judged critically.

According to a researcher (sic) at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole.

I wonder if it's an age thing? Straw poll..... how old are those of us who hate it and those of us who use it a lot?

I am 39 and I hate it!
