Can anyone help with this?

Hi ladies, this isn't anything to do with weight etc but I'm browsing the board at the minute so thought I'd ask.

I've just had a phonecall from my daughter, who's 21 weeks pregnant. She's had a bit of bleeding today, and rang the doctor for advice. Doc spoke to midwife and told her 'anyone over 20 weeks needs to go to the delivery suite'.

Um ... what the hell? She's absolutely distraught now and doesn't know what to do. Doc didn't say anything else to her. Is this a normal response to a bit of bleeding at this stage?

Any advice would be much appreciated, I don't know what to tell her myself. I would have thought the doc would want to see her, not that she should go to the delivery suite! She says the bleeding has stopped so I've told her to just keep an eye on it, get plenty of rest and if she wants we'll go up to A + E tomorrow.

I doubt the doctor could help in this situation where as a midwife or obstatrician (sp?) would be able to check her out. Any bleeding that's unexpected should be checked out, even if it's stopped. It could be a number of things (note all of this is just going by what I've read).

She could be fine or there could be a problem so the sooner she goes and gets it checked the better. Just because she's stopped bleeding doesn't mean it's all okay again. If it was me I'd be at the hospital right away.

I'm sure the comment of going to the delivery suite wasn't meant to scare her, just simply that is the best place for anyone at 21 weeks. I was told that up until 20 weeks (I think) any problems call my GP or midwife, but after that always go to the midwife/hospital.

OK thanks hon, I've left a message and am waiting for her to ring me back, I'll pass on what you've said. Thanks for your help.

hi ive had bleeding throught at have always either gone to the early pregnancy unit(under 24 weeks) or to the maturnity ward(+24 weeks). im sure all if fine but its best to get it checked out!! x

Hi elizabeth :)

This happened to me with my first Son at 20 weeks pregnant and it's hard not to panic I know. I went in to the hospital to be checked, put on the monitor for a couple of hours, bleeding stopped and was then sent home again.

I'm sure everything will be fine and this can be a common thing. My Son is 23 years old now :D

Best wishes to you and your daughter,

Isis x :)

Thanks so much for the replies ladies, I think I was panicking a little bit myself so it really helped.

She called me back and is much calmer now, I explained that the reason she was told to go to the delivery suite is just because they can do more there to find out what's going on. I think the doctor should have explained that to her, might have saved her the distress.

I've also been looking on the 'net and have found quite a few stories about sudden bleeding at 20+ weeks, none of which turned out to be anything serious so that's reassuring.

She's still at work at the moment and is feeling OK, we'll see how she is this evening. :)
