I'm not travelling untill the 6th October, but it looks like the extra security measures will still be in place. Does anyone know how early I should turn up to check in? My flight will be from Gatwick at 9.30pm and Ive got to go on the M25. I have checked the BAA website and it says extra security checks are still in place and to allow extra time, but it doesn't say how much extra.

hi

:) Well tracey as your a bit shifty looking and your going to have all that luggage i would give it a couple extra hours :D :D

LMAO! :D :D You know me too well Kelly!

Oh dear! Doesn't anyone know the answer? If any of you are travelling via Gatwick in the next few weeks, will you let me know how long I should allow for checking in please?
Thankyou

I'm not entirely sure about Gatwick but Stansted is operating normally again now, even though additional security measures are still in place like having to take off your shoes to go through the security scanners which adds a bit of extra time to passing through departures - so my advice is to go straight through as soon as you check-in your luggage.

I suspect Gatwick is the same as both airports are operated by the BAA, and they were recommending that people didn't turn up TOO early as the check-in desks weren't opening until 2 hours before departure. It's worth checking a few days beforehand with your tour operator/airline's website to see if there's any updated info.

Have a great time!! :D

Thanks Ann and Sharon, looks like I won't have to worry to much about allowing extra time. I will take your advice and check the details a few days before I fly!
Thankyou!

Arrived home from Canada this morning after a two week holiday.

We arrived at the airports 2 hours before time and it worked well.

We also checked in online and chose our seats 24 hours before the flight! Not sure when that facility happened, or whether it was just our airline that does that, but it worked well.

Saved lots of hanging around in queues as we were able to do the 'fast bag drop' queue which was much smaller, giving us extra time to sit drinking coffee and watching the world go by :)

Since replying to you, I've now booked a holiday to Morocco flying out from Gatwick on 1st October .. so I'll be there before you.

Unfortunately I won't be able to get online to tell you how it was at the airport before you go - but I'm going to get there no earlier than 2 hours before departure .. unless I hear differently in the meantime :)

Hi guys
Thankyou all for your replys! I think I will turn up about 2 hours ahead of my flight unless I hear otherwise! Thankyou all for the info!

I'd add an extra hour. The problem at Gatwick is the check through into the departures/gate area. Everyone has to be searched, shoes off etc and it is taking forever. The actual checkin of luggage itself is ok its passport control. That was my experience going to Tunisia anyway.

Hi Georgias Mum
Thanks for the info! I will add an extra hour on just to be on the safe side!

I flew out of Gatwick 2 weeks ago and at that time it was certainly advisable to give yourself another good hour for Queuing. I thought that Gatwick had it pretty well organised. My family (including my 2 year old son) were thoroughly searched (pat downs, shoes x-rayed, belts removed, no liquids or gels in hand luggage etc) when entering the departure lounge and I was patted down again before boarding.

I flew back yesterday from Nice and the organisation was appalling. I couldn't care a less how long I have to wait, particularly with heightened security. However, the way security was handled in France didn't fill me with too much confidence.

The Captain even apologised for the delay departing and said that it was because of inadequate security personnel (not sure if that meant numbers of or competence of) at Nice Airport, which I think is only second to Paris in terms of traffic!

Hi Brad
Thanks for the info, I will most definately allow at least an hour for going through security! I'm a little worried about the waiting around because my Mum is partially disabled and relies on crutches to get around and she can't stand up for very long. I think I will give Gatwick a call a couple of weeks before we travel and see if they can lend us a wheelchair to use in departures.

Hi Tracey, i would get there at LEAST 3 hours before your flight, when i went in May we only just made it before our gate opened, and that was before all the extra security checks.

Sorry June, my message probably wasn't too clear. I absolutely agree, I meant an additional hour on top of the two normally recommended.

BRAD, sorry i was just agreeing with you.......with all the checks an extra hour would be advisable
Great minds think alike.
