Gym/Exercise

I joined a gym about a year ago, went religiously for about 5weeks after initially losing 5stone and then when I started putting the weight back on stopped as was too embarrased  and havent been since...hmmm..:sign0007:

Its strange how when I am good with eating, I love going to the gym, but when I am bad (and a time I should go), I dont!!

I am determined to beat my fears of going to the gym while at a larger size. Has anyone else gone to the gym/exercise while doing the Total Solution on exante. I couldnt do it when I was on Cambridge, not enough calories or energy and was advised against it!

This year its more important than ever as I have set myself the rather scary challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro in October for charity...:fear:

Hello,

Like you I loved going to the gym - but being an 'all or nothing' type I stopped last year...

I am going to go to the gym on Exante total BUT only to do some light cycling as I have an office job so im sat down all day. Im not going to go mad though as its so few calories we have. I plan to go three times a week for 45 mins, but as I said I will only be on a bike and nothing that breaks me into a huge sweat or anything!

Hi Sandyblack - you did so well losing 11lbs in your first week! Well done! :) Thats what I was thinking - just three times a week for an hour or so, nothing heavy..and a few more hours in the sauna..hmmm...:)

Exactly!! The more pampering the better I think!

I dont walk anywhere or do any physical exercise as im either at my desk or driving to a meeting. So some cycling would help I think. Im not touching the cross trainer or stepper though - I would prob pass out!!

Yes I was mega pleased with the 11lbs loss, its made it all worth it!! I just need to keep focused and not let the girls at work tempt me with anything. I know the loss will decrease massively this week but to get such a chunk off in the first week has given me an extra spring in my step!!!!

Gym is good, but try and concentrate more on strength-building excercised than anything that involves cardio.

Weights and core stuff is all good and will help you build muscle which in turn will boost your metabolism and help speed your weightloss.

Unfortunately when you are on a VLCD too much cardio excercise will lead to you losing muscle mass so could impede your weightloss.

Do a bit of a search on here, there are a few posts about it with the scientific studies that back it up quoted.

From both personal experience and reading, I would say don't rush straight into exercise too, certainly don't increase the amount you do for the first few weeks of your diet. VLCD is pretty extreme and you need to give your body chance to adapt!

Thanks for the advice!x
Have tried searching for further guidance but cant seem to find any? Am hesitant to start exercising if it will impede weight loss? Xx

Any help appreciated x

Thanks yambabe. That was really interesting :)

Does anyone understand the body for life? I need to start weight training really to build some strength up for getting up Mt Kili and after reading the article about VLCDs and resistance training thought it would be a good way of starting to get fit at home. Then later in the diet I can include some light cardio workouts.

I had a look at the body for life website but a) cant really understand what they mean and b) dont know what half the things are leg presses etc etc :)

I'm about to attempt the Body for life challange. Try Amazon for the books, theres the one thats aimed at everyone and also one just for Woman. They both have exercise plans and food plans but the former book pushes the use of protein supplements (ie shakes, powders and bar) which I am going to try to avoid.
Let me know if you start it and how you get on, i've struggled to find up to date forums on this subject so would be good to have someone to chat with about it.

I really like 'The Firm' series. Some are way way to intensive now. However the ones I linked below are rather gentle. More about sculpting and toning.

I do the weight ball and resistance cord dvds. each are only 30 minutes long. They do contain a small amount of cardio, which depending on how your body is feeling and reacting you could skip through. I tend to do the upper body movements and miss out the lower cardio heart pumping leg twirling kicking jumping section, but carry on doing the core and moves that they 'addon' until that bit passes.

I brought a set from amazon, for £29 that included the dvds and the weights and cords. Plus a pilates resistance band and dvd. It is a region 2 dvd though but I find it plays well on the xbox, or I assume any other console or multi region player.http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Firm-Bo...sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1276948213&sr=1-2

Walking is my main activity at the moment, but I do find using the light weights and 30 minutes of the dvd make me feel I have done something.

Warning though, I tried to do the rountines the first few days and it wasn't a good idea. I felt whoozy. So will try to start again this second week, but will be listening to my body. Our bodies are already working hard to stabilise on the new calorie intake. Slow and steady for me I think.

Well I have done what I should have done about 10 years ago, I have bought home multi gym. Why you ask, this morning I got stuck into the garden, I mean really got going, moved pots, dug up here and gthere, snipped everything in sight, rakes leaved under the trees, stood up under one of the small trees and scrathed the top of my head, blead like a stuck pig and took everything to the dump. Got home and nearly collapsed, thought I was going to die, I swear, I was totally out of breath and realised I have to do some kind of excersise so went bezerk and bought the home gym. Also got a bid on ebay for a recumbent excersise bike. The new me I suppose. Me likey.

Hi,
I'm new to this site (in fact this is my first forum response) I was just looking for people that have done/doing or planning on doing the Body For Life Challenge.
I did it last year and absolutely loved it...I lost so much weight and toned up loads...however a year later and the weight has piled back on so I'm thinking about doing it again...however it would be nice to have some people from the UK to chat about it with.
When I did it last year...I very rarely had the supplements...I think during the whole 12 weeks I had about 4 of them...just while I was out and happened to pass a Holland and Barrett.
The diet is VERY achievable just by eating the amounts that you are meant to (6 mini meals and a fist full of each protein and carbs)...the problem I had was trying to think of new meals to eat each time...I ate far more on that diet than I do normally!
Good luck
