The new science on what to eat to stay on top of your game

OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
Eating fat makes you fat
NEW THINKING

Research from the Mayo Clinic in the US found that people who increased their intake of monounsaturated fats lost weight without decreasing kilojoules. Eating more olive oil, nuts, olives and avocados has been shown to reduce belly fat.
OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
You can afford to eat a mountain of pasta after a big workout
NEW THINKING
To lose weight you have to create a kilojoule deficit. Research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that it doesn’t matter if you eat healthy carbs (like sweet potato) or unhealthy ones (like white bread), it’s the kilojoules you nosh that make you lose or gain weight. Before you rush for the kitchen cupboard, bear in mind that one medium banana takes around 17 minutes of cycling at a moderate pace to burn off.
OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
Chewing gum makes you hungrier so you eat more
NEW THINKING
Break out the Wrigley’s to quell your hunger pangs. People who chewed gum for an hour a day ate fewer kilojoules at lunch, felt less hungry throughout the day and used five per cent more kilojoules because they felt more energetic, found a study at the University of Rhode Island, US.
OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
Room temperature water is best for rehydrating you before and during training
NEW THINKING
Keep it chilled. A study in Medicine & Science in Sport & Exercise got cyclists to drink 800ml of chilled water before riding in a humid environment, then got them to drink smaller amounts as they rode. They cycled 23 per cent longer than riders who slugged lukewarm water. “Drinking cold water may be the most direct way to reduce core body temperature, so it’ll take you longer to heat up and slow down,” says study author Dr Jason Lee. Use an insulated water bottle to keep your water cold and performance hot.
OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
After a tough workout it’s OK to take a Nurofen to offset soreness
NEW THINKING
Keep yourself clean. Research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that popping an anti-inflammatory after a sweat session stifles production of the chemicals necessary for muscle growth and repair. Plus, using them resulted in no effect on inflammation or muscle soreness.
OLD-SCHOOL THINKING
Steaming is the best way to cook vegies
NEW THINKING
Ditch the steamer and crank up the microwave. Research at the University of Murica, Spain, boiled, steamed, pressure-cooked, baked, microwaved, grilled and fried broccoli and cauliflower (mmm, fried cauliflower). They found the trusty micro made them retain the most the recovery-boosting antioxidants. Slap your vegies in a bowl with a splash of water and microwave for 2-3 minutes to reap the health benefits.
