Underactive Thyroid

Hi,
My 14 year son has been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and low vitamin b12. I am bringing him to see a paediatrician tomo on referral from doctor.
I just wonder, can someone give me any information about how he will improve once he gets the correct meds?
He has all the classic symptoms - lethargy, weight gain, lack of concentration etc etc, but I thought that was normal teenagerness!!! lol.

Anyway, thanks.

I've an underactive thyroid myself. Once they have found the correct dose of thyroxine your son should start to feel better within a few weeks. I cant remember how long myself but I seem to recall a gradual imrovement in how I felt and how much energy I had rather than a immediate improvement.

Hope everything goes well

Hi I also was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and low vitamin B12 in August 2009. I get an injection for B 12 once a month, and I take Eltroxin for my Thyroid, it takes a few months until the B12 works, with the underactive thyroid I have good days and bad, but my hair has stopped falling out. I can still get very tired, but nothing like I was, and I am 1 pound off losing 7stone, so the tablets must be helping my weight loss. It might take a few months for your son to see the difference but give it time and it will happen.

I've got an under-active thyroid too. Find it annoying as!

I was diagnosed 9 years ago with underactive thyroid and put on meds....I have noticed no difference whatsoever! I keep having my blood tested and everytime it comes back normal!!! Researched on the Net and found that what is 'normal' for one person, might not be 'normal' for another!! I'm so annoyed that I feel like I'm running on empty but Drs keep saying I'm fine!!! Grrrr!!!
