I am not sure how you would use them in a cake if they are not ground down as a substitute for flour? Not sure a cake would hold together with them in their full form.
I think it would possibly still apply to the misuse of free food, as it is not part of a filling meal, so I am not sure. If you can eat it and still lose weight, then I wouldnt worry too much, but if you find the weight is not ocming off, then you may need to reassess.
