Protein and excersise question

Hi all,

Horrible weather today or what,it's peeing it down here :(

Anyway, I started back at the gym today:) and plan to do 1hr 3 times a week.

My trainer was shocked when I said I was only consuming about 4kcal/day, and he suggested that on my training days I should have some extra protien.

I don't know what to do, Im SS'ing  would I still lose if I did AMM 3 x week on my gym days monday, wednesday and fridays?

Thanks

I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will be along in a while ..... but I though protein was for building muscle and carbs was for energy. That's what I learned in my biology A levels anyway.

They're utilised differently by the body so I'm not quite sure why you'd need extra protein unless you were concentrating on building muscle.

As I said though, someone who 'knows' will probably clarify this.

As far as I'm aware though, we shouldn't be doing highly intensive cardio workouts when we're SSing anyway so I'd say be careful not to overdo it.
I'm about to have my gym induction and will make sure I do enough to 'get warm' but avoid thrashing myself to the point of dripping with sweat.

Hope someone can advise you better shortly :)

Do you think doing a mix off SS and AAM will cause me to lose less each week. would my body get confused?

Im only losing about 2lb a wk at the mo, thats why Iv started back at the gym, to try and get losses around 3-5lb/wk and to tone up.

Good luck on your induction :)

Hi BMTLM. I gym 3 times a week (down from 5 to compensate the VLCD) I got my programme changed on Tuesday as I physically couldnt do the programme I was on Pre-CD, which was pure fat burning.

Your trainer covering his arse re: the extra protein thing. Put it down to an ignorance of the CD. My gym are fully aware about what I am doing. They don't approve, but are really great and keep an eye on me and are supoortive. They poo-poo this VLCD idea.

That all said - dont go mental in the gym if you are just starting. I started the gym back in January and was going 7 days a week. Told I was over taining and knocked it to 5 days, and now to 3.

My old programme:

25 mins full body X-trainer
25 mins lower body programme
25 mins treadmill 3.5mph/incline 4
series of weights for toning
15 mins cardio on X-trainer

Now...
15 mins on bike, 15 mins on treadmill, 15 mins x-trainer, 5 mins on rower and the series of weights - and on my VLCD its enough as I burn off way more than I intake.

Hope it all goes well for you! xx

Thanks RD :)

If you're really committed to the idea of regular training, couldn't you consider 790? It's still a VLCD but with just that extra bit 'fuel'. Worth thinking about maybe.
Apparently, the losses between 790 and SS are negligible and maybe the extra few cals plus the exercise could be just the boost your metabolism needs to let go of the fat reserves.
Perhaps you should talk it over with your CDC :)

If your intention is to remain with SS, then i would say dont do your gym exercises too intense and take it easy in the begining.

After a couple of weeks if you think that you can manage a more intense workout then go for it. but dont overdo yourself.

And if your Gym is 1st, the try a slight higher programme.

Remember to drink water.. before, during and after your exercises

I would recommend getting the fitness with Cambridge from your CDC. It shows what you can do exercise wise from light to intense all whilst having the calories you are on.

I make up my own routine every night in my living room to a mixed CD, never do more than I can cope with and drink lots of water throughout.

Maybe start with swimming or badminton? xxxx

Thanks matey:)

My instructor has written a prog for me, 40 mins fat burn, keeping HR around 150 bpm (which is hard) and 30 mins toning.

Are you SSing or 790 whilst working out?

Thanks

You need carbs for fuel for sport in general and protein for muscle growth and repair (so your instructor is suggesting it to protect your muscles. Obviously you are not going to gain any muscle while on a VLCD).

I can't really say whether you need to eat more carbs and/or protein without seeing the programme he's designed for you.

Just a point - personal trainers may not necessarily be experts on VLCDs but they do tend to be experts on the kind of fuel your body needs for different types of exercise. They will most likely know more about this particular aspect of nutrition than your CDC.

If you are on Sole Source then you really shouldn't be trying to speed up your losses with exercise - if you exercise sufficiently to actually make a noticeable difference to your weight loss then yes, you do need to be eating more.

On the other hand, while you're on Sole Source gentle exercise is a great idea to improve your general health and fitness levels.
