Can we drop the 'onlys' please?

Devon Dolce

1lb at a time!
Hi all, as someone who loses slowly, I do tend to get a bit annoyed, fed-up, dispondent (delete as appropriate), when I see threads on here where peeps say they have 'only lost half a pound this week' or 'only lost a pound this week'.

Each and every loss is an achievement lovelies and those 'only half a pounds' all add up:

0.5lb loss per week = 26lbs (1 stone 12lbs) a year

1lb = well yes, I'm sure we can all do the maths, but is 52lbs (3 stone 10lbs) a year

Every loss is a success - onwards and downwards xxx

I was a SW slow loser. 1lb was a big achievement, 1lb, two weeks in a row was truly wonderful. It got me there eventually though - now a target girl, and staying there!

Well said, DD. It's not a race! I am thrilled to bits with a pound a week, others at class get quite stroppy if they lose a pound. They seem to think I am almost weird to be happy with a pound. The slower I lose it and retrain my eating habits, the less likely I am to pile it back on!

I agree, if I get a 1lb loss I am very pleased! Unfortunately I put 1lb on last week but I'm hoping to have lost it again this week.

thats a valid point and i have found your mathmatic workout very inspiring . i have often got a bit disheartened with just a pound off in a week , but its only made me more determined to work towards a better goal the following week , so far ive been very lucky as i havnt gained in any week.... i shouldnt have said that as its got to come soon !! lol

Im a 1lb a week looser and Im happy with that. It has taken me a long time to get used to it, but I have realised that 1lb a week really does make a difference and even though it may not be as quick as I would always like, but its coming off and any small amount is better than nothing!

Guilty as charged!!

But I honestly don't mean to put others down. I am made up with any loss. But if i felt like ive had a REALLY good week. And I know my body can lose more than half a pound a week I can't help but feel slightly dissappointed. But at the same time im over the moon I lost. Does that make sense? So i think the word 'only' represents my slight dissappointment.

My advice would be try and not let it get to you. It's just a word :) And if people want to feel as though they could have done slightly better on the scales then so be it. As long as you are happy with your losses than thats fabby tabby!

I don't wanna cause offence but I think this thread is just a good old excuse for a moan. :p

when I hear only a pound it always reminds me off the poem I saw posted here once. thank you to who ever posted it its help me and others at my group.

Only One Pound

Hello! Do you know me? If you don't, you should. I'm a pound of fat. And I am the happiest pound of fat that you would ever want to meet.

Want to know why? It's because no one ever wants to lose me; I'm ONLY ONE POUND, just a pound!

Everyone wants to lose three pounds, five pounds, or fifteen pounds, but never only one.

So I just stick around and happily keep you fat. Then I add to myself, ever so slyly, so that you never seem to notice it. That is until I've grown to ten, twenty, thirty or even more pounds in weight.

Yes, it's fun being ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT, left to do as I please.

So, when you weigh in, keep right on saying, "Oh, I only lost one pound." (As if that were such a terrible thing) For you see, if you do this, you'll encourage others to keep me around because they'll think I'm not worth losing.

And, I love being around you ? your arms, your legs, your chin, your hips and every part of you.

Happy Days!!! After all, I'm ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT!!!

I was 1lb a week loser too and it got me there in the end aswell.

I am NOT a pound a week loser I have lost 25lbs in 48 weeks and I have loved every ounce that I lose lol xxxx

I too am guilty as charged!! I probably say "only" as well, but shouldn't. A pound is a pound nearer to target and you are right, I shall endeavor to drop the "onlys" from here on in :D xx

Hi Everyone, been reading all the slimming world posts to gain inspiration and also look at recipes and food diarys. I actually lost 7 and a half pounds on my first week, last week by sticking to the plan, eating loads and going to the gym. I would be happy at 1,2 or 3 pounds a week as have a long way to go. Thanks for all the bril informative posts.

I can understand why people feel the need to say "only" especially if they make a big effort and stick to plan 100%. I don't take offence as I feel we are here to support each other and provide motivation and encouragement for one another. If someone says to me "oh gosh you've only lost that" then it's another story :)

I am also guilty of "only" comment's on my losses

Sorry - will take your comments on board & try not to in future - lik eyou have pointed out, every week at 1lb does give you 52 - so yep I agree - onwards & downwards!!

I love this forum!

Sorry to hijack but I was just wondering how long I should expect to take to lose 70lb?

I thought maybe a year because that would be slow and steady? How long has it taken any of you to lose any large amount?

Any advice appreciated :)

And yes...1lb is a lb! And I really hadn't thought of it like that and I'm glad I read this before my first WI tomorrow - so even if it is ONLY 1lb its 1lb in the right direction!

Hear, hear- I have lost 7 stone with 'just a pound' a week, and would happily jump on anyone who tells me that 1lb of fat lost is not a MASSIVE achivement.

When a person diminishes their own loss like this, they also make other people feel inadequate if they too had a similar loss- I work damn hard for every miniscule ounce I get rid of!
