Red day favourites!!!

funcurls

Never gets tired of SW!
Hi all, I'm usually a fan of Extra Easy, but I'm going to throw in some red days, which I've been meaning to do for a while now but never seem to get round to it as EE always seems easier to me! I think I just need to get my head around red and get some inspiration!! Which is why I'm starting this thread!! I'd be grateful if you fans of red could post your favourite meals AND snacks on a red day! I've scoured the food diaries but want to see peoples' hot faves!! Thanks!X

I am in love with surf n turf at the moment nom nom nom!!!
Bacon ,eggs ,mushrooms and tomatoes with Heb toast.
Also lean ham for snacking and tikka fridge raiders are 1.5 syns.

How about snacking only on superfree, syns and healthy extras for one week. it makes red days so much easier to think about and really can boost the weight loss xx

On red days I usually have some new potatoes as a HEB with my dinner together with loads of veg and then choose from lots of different free foods. There's gammon, salmon, steak, chicken casserole, fish, homemade burgers from beef, turkey or pork mince. The list is pretty much endless. If I want to cut out my HEB of potatoes, I have roasted butternut squash instead. One of my favourite meals is cinnamon liver with roasted butternut squash. They go really well together.

For lunch I often have a huge superfree salad with either chicken or ham and cottage cheese. Sometimes I'll do an omelette.

If I fancy something more than superfree to snack on, I'll grab a bit of ham or chicken.

Extra easy days are easier but my losses are always better on red so I always do a few each week, especially before my weigh in.

Funcurls i had forgotten you are one of us !!! Shift work is blah but you may find that by increasing your protein by having red days you may have far more energy. I used to live on prawns and cold bacon and onion tortilla as snacks when doing nights , both easy to grab.xx

Eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes.
Steak, mushrooms and loads of salad
Corned beef quiche
Snacking on cooked chicken and ham etc
Sardine salads

Have a peek at my diary, as I do red days sometimes :) Did one today and had beef strogannoff from last months mag. I never use my HeB for potatoes or pasta, I enjoy the extra cereal or ryvita :) xx

That beef stroganoff is lush init!! Its become a form fave of the family we have it quite often. On a red day you could have baked spud or new pots as a HeB with it or on a EE have some rice and veg with it. Its scrummy!

Hey Mate!

Going back to my pre-EE days I remember using certain veg as the carb substitute, so:

Use mashed swede and carrot or mashed butternut sqash where you would normally used mashed potato (so to serve with a lamb shank, or for topping a shepherds pie, with syn free sausages, etc)
Use butternut squash where you would normally have potato wedges, roast potatoes or chips (they stand up to this really well)
Use courgette ribbons instead of spaghetti for all meat based sauces
Roasted superfree veggies are also a great, substantial accompanyment to all meat/fish

xxx

Omelettes are a favourite on red days. Lunch normally consists of a meat or fish salad.
Bacon and Eggs.
Bacon and Tuna Quiche is an old favourite which i love cold as a snack and i use it to bulk up my lunch box for work.
Tinned Salmon on ryvita is a filling lunch, i clean the salmon then mix with salt, pepper and vinegar and add chopped peppers.
Hard boiled Eggs
Soft Boiled eggs with soilders
Meatloaf and vegetables
Tomato, Chilli and Prawn sauce with steam fresh vegetables.
Are but a few ideas.......

I tend to stick to red days.

Evening meals - erm........... Cottage pie filled with so much veg & topped with carrot & swede ( I also mix in egg whites to help it go crunchy)
Steak with salad & boiled sliced eggs
Seafood stirfry - again packed with lots of stirfried veg
Casseroles
Curry
Really simple is extra lean minced beef, mix in some carrots, courgettes, mushrooms & peppers, tin of chopped toms & some chilli powder, garlic & you have a really simple chilli
The chicken, Sausage & cheese cake from the recipe section has become a huge hit in our house too!
I often serve with pots from my HEb - either boiled or part boiled & finished in the oven sprayed with frylight as either roasties or wedges

Most things I make I can have left overs for lunch too.

Don't forget quiches too.

Snacks - I try & snack on fruit, esp melon as it's a SS food.

When I want savoury - then sliced ham, quiche or prawns etc.

Another tip - check out britmums log - alot of her recipes are EE but are easy to omit things & change to red days.

hiya,
My favorite for breakfast is cheese (hxa) omelette keeps me going till about 2pm. If at work i live on, every day, no joking ,fresh salmon sandwiches(hxb). Yum bloody yum. Mixed with a small amount of ex light mayo.
Snacks alpen light bars (heb) FF fomage frais, masses of fruit salad meringue nests.
Quick easy supper is SW chips (heb) and egg.
I eat steak, fish and bacon and egg. Am not abe to get all the low fat goodies you all can so i make do with eating more fish.
good luck , IMHO red days are the best!!!!!

I just had some steamed veggies with it, not in the mood for stodge, it's too warm at the moment :9529: Oh had rice though.

Have you got welsh in you by any chance? you say lush and have a pony called dylan? xxx

No lol funny though! I am actually part Italian and the rest is Lancashire. Although lived here in the Cotswolds for over 20 years. Dad was in the army so we moved around the world all over when I wad a sprog. Dylan is a welsh cob section D and came to me with that name, so I didn't get a choice with it.

That reminds me, I tried brown rice after Brit mums suggestion and was actually pleasantly surprised! Dunno if will like brown pasta but willing to give it a go!

One of my fave red day snacks in the fridge is crab sticks!

hello lovely, take a peek at my diary as I have 95% red days - carbs just aren't my best friend! I love meatballs served with veggies, curries, goulash, simple chicken stuffed with pesto and quark and wrapped in bacon, salmon and prawns, gammon with loads of veggies and always have SW mushroom, ham and courgette quiche on standby! xxx

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! Lots of lovely ideas there!! I'm having my first of a run of red days today and actually very excited!! I had a 3-egg omlette (with herbs) and 3 Joe's (syn-free)chipolata sausages then a large piece of fresh pineapple for brekkie! Later I'm having a frylighted salmon fillet with a drizzle of maple syrup and a big pile of stirfried veg (onion, spring greens, leek, courgette, red pepper, red chilli, carrot) then at about midnight (night shift work break) I'm having 'Fiesta pork casserole' from the current SW magazine (slow cooking in my slow cooker as we speak- the aromas are wafting into the room)!! Snacks will be a packet of Ryvita Minis and a HIFI bar (HEXbs) and a glass of semi-skimmed milk (HEXa) I have also cooked some extra Joe's chipolata sausages so I could have them cold and some hard boiled eggs (also cold- or will make some egg sandwiches tomorrow!) Fruit will also be a snack! How does this sound to everyone?X

All sounds very good to me hun! For a filling lunch I've started having egg and bacon mayo (1 syn using Hellmanns E/L) and 4 x Sesame Ryvita (Hex B) which is delicious! You could make the mayo up beforehand and then take it in with you! I'm also going to perfect my SW Coronation Chicken tomorrow and will post the recipe in the summer section when I'm happy with it! Just a couple more ideas xx

sounds yum!

my red day faves are:

Steaks - with salad and SW chips with bacon and cheese on top (HEB and HEA)
Syn free quiche - with various fillings, red peppers and mushrooms, bacon and prawns, ham and cheese, etc etc
Chicken fillet pieces with very low fat ceaser dressing as a snack and dip.
Salmon and couscous (syn the couscous) with greens
Chicken with bacon on top and cheese melted between that

Snacks are mainly fruit, babybels, HIFI and Kelloggs bars, yoghurts etc!

xxx good luck - GO RED!!! xxx

Sorry, I made an error!! The 'fiesta pork casserole' wasn't from the SW mag at all- it was from the new SW cookbook 'family feasts for a fiver'!!X
