excercise and SS

Hi All

I'm doing ss on and off admitedly but I am now doing a bootcamp excercise class and was wondering about doing ss with it.

How much excercise do you do on ss?

Thanks

I know that I'm following the 810 plan and my CDC has told me to be careful with too much cardiovascular exercise as it makes me feel dizzy and lightheaded if I'm too energetic so I stick to swimming and some Wii fit. However, everyone is different as I know that some people run a lot and do quite a bit. I think the main point is that you do whatever your body tells you is right and if at any point you feel unwell, dizzy, nauseous etc then stop. Don't forget the water!!!

It's difficult to know exactly how much is 'okay' on a VLCD, as our fitness levels are different and what one person might call high intensity, for another it's just a walk in the park (excuse the pun).

But...here goes :D You shouldn't be doing any high intensity stuff on SS. Resistance is always good, but I sort of imagine 'bootcamp' to be mainly high intensity cardio? If it is, you need to go up a few plans.

Going by how you feel isn't always a good indicator for levels. It's not just about preventing dizziness etc. If you are doing high intensity cardio, your body just wont have enough fuel available to use quickly and will go to your lean (muscles) to burn protein for it's needs. Then of course, the metabolism suffers.

Even though cardio doesn't really help with weight loss, it's good to do some low intensity stuff for it's health benefits.

Dr Howard (creator of Cambridge) suggests gentle walking, but I've heard that more can be done with care..just not a lot. And do the weight bearing exercise if you can as that will help preserve any lean mass loss that can occur on any diet :)

Hi KD or anyone else who might know, I've started doing some daily weight training, not much really just dumbbell reps. Apart from the fact building muscle might throw deceive the scales would it effect the actual diet? Thanks!

There wont be any muscle building as you can't build muscle on any weight loss diet.

The best you get is to help preserve any muscle you have at the moment, which is a real bonus.

As for the scales. Ha. Never try and predict what the scales are going to say. I guess there is a chance that you might hold on to some water weight, but if you are doing the diet, then you are losing fat anyway.

I know it could be demotivating if there was some water gain but if you can hold on to the fact that it's fat you are wanting to lose and the scales wont always reflect that in the short term, you'll do what is right for your body and not be bullied by those scales, and resistance exercise is fab for your body.

Thanks KD, that's very helpful information! That's bascially what I want to do, I'm using the same weight dumbbells so I'm not trying to build muscle I just don't want loose skin on my arms if I lost all the muscle so I figured some resistance might help stop that happening!

hi

when i've been on ss i've just done my normal amount of exercise. which has consisted of the following:-

1st time i did ss i was running. i used to do a 3 mile, 5 mile and 7 mile run a week plus 2 days at the gym doing a few weights and some more cardio.

this time on ss i was..... running (got to 27 mins of running twice a week), using the bike, swimming, pilates class, body pump class, weights. (i go to the gym twice for my cardio then twice for classes plus time swimming.)

i've recently, this week is my first week, gone up to the 810 plan as i was struggling with my energy levels to cope with what i was doing and my bmi and weight. as my weight dropped my energy levels on ss started to drop too. the 810 has given me a huge amount of energy back.

p.s i believe, as i can personally see it, that you do actually build muscle whilst exercising even on ss plans.

by loosing weight and doing resistant exercises such as my body pump class i can see a lot of definition appearing on my arms and legs (most exposed areas).

i can see my muscles and i can see them working as i'm exercising (i look in the mirror). my legs are getting amazing and even my hubby has told me how toned i'm looking.

i've always been a strong person and can lift my 2st 7lbs 3 year old up and straight into the air for quite a long time. my arms and legs are very strong.

Just replied on another thread about this. You don't build muscle on SS, you can't. You need more calories than even maintenance to build muscle and on SS we are far from that. Your body isn't going to take the few calories it has to keep your major organs going and use them on building muscle. It's not that daft ;)

However, you will see more definition as you lose weight as the coating of fat goes and of course, resistance exercise will help retain the lean mass you have at the moment :)
