Weight continues to rise?

Hi guys,

I left a VLCD a couple of weeks ago, did the whole refeed thing etc. and after my first week I'd stayed the same weight pretty much, however on my second week, I've found that the weight is creeping up no matter what I do.

After leaving the VLCD my weight was 96.9kg, by the end of the first week it was 97.3kg, and now nearing the end of the second week it's 98.5kg, wtf?

I've been eating lean meats and salads, following a SW-type plan of 'syns allowances', and I've had plenty of exercise, so I don't understand why it's going up. The only thing I can think of is I haven't been drinking enough water, but is that enough to cause weight gain? Is it even fat?! I hope it's just water weight.

After a VLCD for a considerable amount of time I can only assume that it will tkae your body/metabolism time to adjust to burning a normal amount of calories again.

How long did you do on each of the steps towards reintegration of food? Did you gain weight while you were going up the steps, or just when you finished.

Yeah, it'll be water. Highly unlikely to be fat on what you are eating

The lipo refeed is quite short, and that's fine, but it could take a little longer to adjust to the extra food.

A couple (few) things that are likely to be going on.

Sodium: Lipo is probably low sodium, and after being on low sodium, we tend to get a bigger water gain when having more sodium. Once your body gets used to it again, the water fluctuations wont be so 'dramatic' when increasing salt.

Metabolism: Which slows on all weight loss plans, will slow a little more on a VLCD. It'll restore and if you've done the refeed, it probably is on it's way up already. I doubt the metabolism thing accounts for much in this short period of time, so don't worry on that score.

Dehydration: Lipo like other ketogenic diets is dehydrating, hence the reason why you need to drink a lot. It's low carb, so there is a loss of glycogen which holds 3 to 4 times it's own weight in water. You've done the refeed, so it's probably partly/mostly back, but there could be a bit more to go. This is fine too. Ideally we want it all back to 'normal' levels.

Sometimes the body does weird things. Holds on to a bit more water for so many reasons. Keep up the water intake as it really does help. It will all settle down as long as you aren't going crazy with excess food. Make sure you are eating enough.

I guess you are doing red days? Or basing it roughly on that? It might be an idea when you are feeling more confident with the scales to get some extra carbs in at some point, even if it's means moving to green days for a while, just to help restore the hormones that change when dieting, and raise your metabolism a little more efficiently.

You'll be fine. Just watch the scales with interest, and what you are eating...and don't go too low at this point.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the replies!!! KD thats a super post! You put my mind at rest, thank you :)
