What would you do? (Paypal)

big bear

A bear on a mission!
Ok so I asked on here was Paypal safe etc but I'm not sure what to do, here is the situation:

I put my wedding dress for sale on gumtree. I had a response from a guy that wanted to buy it for his sister in Nigeria. He didn't even ask to see photos or ask any other questions.

He said he wanted to pay by Paypal so I set this up and emailed him requesting payment (he has a yahoo email address) he responded last night & paypal sent me a notification.

He wants me to post the dress to Nigeria & has given me the address. Paypal obviously don't release the money till the dress is delivered & they have the shipping number.

I don't know but have a funny feeling about it.

Do you think as it's Paypal it will be safe & I will get my money or am I right to be worried. My friends assure me Paypal is save but I think it's the posting to Nigeria thing. I googled the address & it comes up as a Kosher wines....

Please any advice grately received.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Why not email paypal and ask their advice? They've always been really helpful when I've had a query about something.

Alot of scams seem to be based in Nigeria. I'd contact paypal.

Contacted Paypal

There I was thinking I sold my wedding dress but it's a big FAT scam the f*cking b*st*rds

Good job I checked though

Thanks, I just knew something wasn't quite right so glad I checked.

For future reference, Paypal puts the money straight into your Paypal account as soon as the purchaser has paid them (less their fees of course!!)

Personally I'd walk away from this one. Why would anyone buy a wedding dress without seeing photos of it or asking anything about it.

I've used paypal before both to send & recieve money & I've never had any problems.

I'd agree with Judimac a lot of scams do seem to be in Nigeria.

Let us know how things pan out.

Great I didn't know this

So pleased you weren't ripped off! Shows your antenna are working :)

But with these scammers the account the money has come from is usually something like a stolen credit card or something so when Paypal find that out they reverse the transaction and take the money back so youre left with a negative Paypal balance and no goods!!

Never ever ever sell anything to someone in Nigeria - 9/10 will be scammers

Ditto to the above post, my ex used to sell things on gumtree and always got replies from nigeria, usually asking to post item recorded delivery and they would pay it when it arrived.........yeah right!
Gumtree do have a teeny weeny warning at the top of the page, and I meen teeny!

Yes, I had a similar experience when someone contacted me asking to send something I had on gumtree. I didn't go with it as it felt dodgy and tbh, I only deal withpaypal when I'm buying off a site or using ebay as I feel that keeps you safer. Well done for checking it out, Suzanne
