Pre - packed sandwhich - what the hell?

I was caught out today and needed something for lunch, I went into boots and found the shapers sandwhiches and I had tuna and cumcumber on brown bread.

If i made this at home it would be free - or at least free with B choice. So why is it 14.5 syns on all plans??

What on earth do they put in a simple sandwhich to make it shoot up the syn chart??

Are there any pre packaged lunches that aren't so high in syns??

I feel your pain as i went to Waitrose services on the M42 and thought i will be good rather than have chocolate i found a pasta and chicken pot and to my horror it was 24syns and there wasnt even hardly any sauce on it....it doesnt make any sense

I am scared stiff of getting anything like this now x

I hate this with soups. Esp New Covent Garden ones which mostly have free ingredients. If you look it up under brand name it has more syns than if you syn calculator it. Really does my head in. One of SWs little quirks!

It's the bread- our HEX B is for 2 slices of very small bread. 'Normal' bread is usually 6 syns per slice.

If the bread was wholemeal you can knock 6 syns off and use your hEX B allowance (or knock 12 syns off and use 2 HEX B if doing red/green day)

so my sandwhich could be 2.5 syns If for example I choose to call today a red day?? Nice!

Thats the other thing, the sandwiches aren't exactly massive either!

Ready made sandwiches with tuna in them usually have mayonnaise as well. And it will probably have had some kind of spread or maybe butter.

If the bread was wholemeal you can deduct 6 syns for a Healthy Extra B choice, but not if it is just brown bread.

Looking at my directory, it seems that all the Boots Shapers sandwiches are pretty high in syns.

If I am out shopping, to be honest I prefer to go hungry until I get home.

But if I do want something then I go to Pret. NO, NOT for their sandwiches!!!! The syn values are incredible!

But their Deluxe Sushi is really nice and is 3.5 syns on EE or Green (7 on Red). They also do a Vegetarian Sushi at 2.5 syns on EE or Green (11.5 on Red).

When I drive up to see my sister on a Saturday it is at that awkward time between the gym and lunch, and I am usually starving. There is a M&S at the petrol station where I stop for a "comfort break" and I usually get a small box of cherry tomatoes or melon which I can eat on the way, because even their "Count on Us" sandwiches are very high.

I don't get it though, I mean all the shapers stuff is supposed to be healthy (or at least healthier than others) and yet its still so bad for you in terms of SW, If its healthy is healthy if its not its not but I don't understand how it can vary so much between plans and sources of information.

"supposed to be healthy". Who says? The company that is selling it to you! All of these jolly little slogans - Light Choices, Count on Us, Good for You, the ridiculous new M&S "Fuller Longer" - don't mean a thing. They are just advertising. They are not "sources of information".

And just as you don't believe what you see in magazine adverts, or on the television (you don't, do you??) then you shouldn't for one moment imagine that shops are being honest with their slogans either.

The packaging Marks and Spencer "Fuller Longer" Chicken, Leek and Smoked Bacon pasta says "High Protein" and "Balanced Carbs" (whatever that is supposed to mean!!) and "created to help you lose weight with our calorie controlled eating plan". As well as the ingredients you would expect, it contains cream and wine and oils (2 types) and flour (2 types). Gosh, they really have tried to keep the calories down haven't they? Well no, it's 545 calories for a very small tub.

Sorry, the above message came across as rather more of a rant than I really intended!!

And by the way, the syn value for the pasta dish I mentioned is 13 on EE and Green and 15 on Red.

And, as you might be wondering - yes I did have some because I was given it, and it was quite nice, but not huge, and I could have made something very similar myself for no syns at all.

so my sandwhich could be 2.5 syns If for example I choose to call today a red day?? Nice!
Exactly!

If you were doing other diets these would be pretty 'good'- but SW isn't about calories. It is about food density and satisfaction. Yes it makes life hard when looking at pre-made food, eating out and ready meals but we SWers get the best deal when sitting down to big plates of delicious home made free goodies that we can eat without weighing or counting

It just takes a bit of forward planning. In certain circumstances SW can feel restrictive but when planned properly it can feel like the least restrictive 'diet' in the world

That's why I keep a Hi Fi bar in my handbag at all times! Did anyone watch "My Big Fat Diet Show" on ch4 a month or so back? They exposed the real fat content on so called 'healthy' choice pre-packagedmeals. I think a chicken pasta salad came out worst, although a pre-packed salad box was also pretty high.

I keep a hifi bar in my handbag and replace it if I eat out when out and about. I usually eat one just before I enter a supermarket so I don't get tempted by the chocolate at the checkout!

If your handbag is big enough, maybe pop a banana or a low syn treat in there too, just to keep you going until you can eat a real meal.

We will all be setting out for the shops with huge handbags with three-course SW meals in them, just in case!!!!

Seriously - that's good advice. Hi-Fi Bars or Alpen Lights or bananas are very portable and great in an emergency.

I have a mega bag to carry nappies and spare clothes for the toddler when we're out and about, so I probably could fit a 3 course meal in mine! :D

Sometimes the hifi bar is just enough to get you home, especially if you have one with chocolate (mint or orange) as it feels like you've had a bit of a treat too :)

.

I remember this a sausage roll and a maccie D's came out healthier than some of the so called health food stuff.

I hardly ever go to Boots for lunch any more - we've got a Morrisons near us so I go for one of their salad bar salads and a baked potato with some beans or VFF cottage cheese!!
