Hi Verity.

Metformin will help if you are insulin resistant, and im some occasions it will bring back periods, if that is one of the problems that you suffer from with PCOS.

Personally when I was on Metformin it didnt help me much at all. I started to feel quite ill on it. By being on a low Gi diet and Running 1-2km a day will help with weight loss. If its due to the metformin or not that you lose the weight, Id personally say it would be more down to your hard work then the tablets

Thanks love,

I am insulin resistant, and I was on meformin for about 1 week but it made me ill too!
only missed my periods for 3months when I was 17, then got diagnosed with pcos and they've been regular ever since.
so it's really the weight loss im concerned with now,

Thanks for your advice.

Id say continue without the Metformin if its making you ill, but obviously consult your GP first, and take it from there.

Although i havnt been diagnosed with being insulin resistant my diet is based on low Gi, as if i have to many carbs I put on weight soo quickly

xx

Your body adapts to met, it can make you feel quite ill to start but that only lasts a couple of weeks. Did you start off with 1 pill a day?

As soon as I start met I stopped putting on weight and my weight losses are higher when I take as I should. When I forget to take it they slow down. For me it's been a miracle drug.

Ya know, it's really nice, (not the best sentiment but I know what I mean lol), to see that others felt really ill with Metformin too, I thought I was alone!

I have PCOS and was on Metformin for about 3months a few years ago. I never lost any weight, but then I'll be honest and hold my hands up and say I wasn't trying and after 3 months it made me feel REALLY bleurgh! My Dr basically made out like I was lying and that there was no way it could make me feel poorly. I just gave up taking it in the end and went back to ignoring the problem :(

But that's all changing now! I know this wasn't really a great help to answering your question, just wanted to say I felt really ill with Metformin too and was suddenly so shocked and relieved that I didn't just make it all up to be able to eat chocolate :D

I might be able to contribute well on here as a newbie. Aged 47, diagnosed at 24, barren, trialed metformin 20 years ago, had to plead for it, didnt do anything for me, but others lost 4 stone on it. had to have mucho laser, always had acne, always struggled with weight, utterly insulin resistant, only ever ate good home made food, never been able to eat sugar and fat together, never a grazer, ended up at 15.9stone.
then, ..small growth removed from upper colon and Roux-n-y Bypass.
Worked a dream.dropped the lot in 20 weeks. periods came back hard, had to have ablation as got aneamia very badly.

However, regained a little weight after 5 years off, ( just got married as well girls, 18 months now, thats when i started putting it on again)so popped in here for advice as 3 of me girlfriends are regulars, and all doing so well . Its this spare bloody tyre, it wibbles and overhangs, so am going to Exante it, see if that works. Normally i only eat 800-1000 cals a day max, but prolly slurp too much wine.
Could do with some exercise tips? any advice gratefully received.
