Hi Guys,

Iv recently met a few people who have taken up cake decorating, and have seen some fab work.. and im so jelous!

I REALLY want to take it up (yes this could be fatal - Fern+Cake=Disaster) for many reasons, but i love baking, albeit not very good at it, and it could be a nice hobby.. and who knows what else?

anywho, i havn't got a clue where to start, what to do, doubt iv even got any of the right equipment, but everyone must start somewhere right?

so my Q? do any of you lovley ladies do this, or can any one suggest a begginers book (preferably with lots of pictures.. and if at all possible someone to come along and demonstrate LOL)

please?

You Tube is great for little tuts, even basic how to cover a cake in fondant smoothly down to how to make figures etc.

There are lots of Cake blogs about there really great to red, lots of the bloggers but instruction/recipies up.

I love these 3 & learnt alot from Lorraines Stuff (the first blog) & you tube. I bought some of Lorraines tuts for modeling and there great.

Extra Icing on the Cake!

Also Debbie Browns books are pretty great for cakes and they have good step by step guides as well.

In all honestly google is your friend, im self taught and have found everything I need to know online & for free (expect Lorraines Tuts!)

Good luck!!

The only advice I can offer you is this....

If you are just practising, use a cake mould (a 'fake cake'). This will stop you being tempted by 'cake mistakes' and then going 'off plan'.

Just found this website www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/wedding/Wfakecakes.htm THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION. I HAVE NEVER USED THIS SITE.

If you are just practising making decorations (i.e. flowers), using icing, why not add some curry powder to the icing? I know that it will give it a strange yellowish tint, but you then wouldn't be tempted to eat your successes and failures!!!

were on the same page then. Ill check out that cake journal!

Cakecentral.com is good as well, that was my first site I used actually!

Another good idea is to go to local cake/sugarcraft shops, they quite often have demonstration classes and tutorials which will be really helpful.
A farm shop near me also has cake decorating courses. They are £25 but worth it imo.

I really want to start, I have recently (over the last few years) discovered a penchant for baking and want to decorate cakes too!

Thanks guys! yes that hobby craft is close by, thank you! im gunna get straight on it.

Iv been concidering, should i get good.. running a small buisness from home as the franchise i work for also does birthday partys and i could advertise through. xx

Absolutely worth every penny, I've just been unlucky that any of the ones close to me have either been fully booked or I've not been able to get to :(

There is a book on Amazon about starting a cake decorating business from home, i can't remember what it's called, but if you search for Cake decorating books it will come up.

This is probably one of my faves that I've done recently :) (sorry.... just showing off ;))
