Oatsosimple HEB

Must try harder...
Hello everyone - can someone help please?! When I have Oatsosimple Original as HEB, I am supposed to have a Scanbran to complete the HEB but I don't have any and don't go to class. Can I have a ryvita or wholemeal crackerbread instead? At the mo I am just having the OSS. Thanks!

The official line is this.... if you don't have the scan bran then there isn't enough fibre in the porridge to make it a B choice, so therefore you have to syn it.

However, I doubt many people have the scan bran and I'd be careful substituting it with anything else!

Hello tiny shoes!

you can buy scan bran from holland a barratts if u want to get some in!

But i agree its not got enough fibre in so you need to syn it

Pulled this from SW website:

Q: Do I have to eat all my Healthy Extras every day?

A: It won't affect your weight loss if you don't take all your Healthy Extra choices. However, the Healthy Extra section is there to ensure a balanced diet, so from a health point of view we recommend that you enjoy all your Healthy Extras each day.

This sound to me as though they recommend that you have them, but not having part of them shouldn't slow your losses. If you're having one part but not the Scan Bran, I shouldn't think you'd need to Syn the bit you have.

Oops I didnt know I had to have this scan bran with OOS! I had it for breakfast on Sunday thinking I was being good! and I didnt syn it!

^^ I think this means that you don't have to have all 4 HEX's

But if, for example, you're eating 2 HEX's (but not eating all of one of them - e.g. you had a sachet of OSS but not the SB, then had a jacket potato), you'd still be eating more fibre than if you had 1 HEX.

I wouldn't then Syn the OSS because I hadn't had the SB.

Will be an interesting one to ask tomorrow night at WI ;)

I always have been told don't feel you need to go hungry after your oats as you can still have a scan bran later if you like. We were told it is just to make up the right amount of food to stave off hunger. I don't think it is about the fibre because you could have 2 hexB and have no fibre eg oilve oil and cheese .

I've been eating OSS for about a month without the scan bran and I've been losing quite steadily.

I use oatsosimple and other porridge. I always use 1 ryvita dark because I can't stand scan bran. Maybe not right but it works for me.

The question for whether to syn if you don't have the full amount really needs clarification as I've been a SW member for 9 years and have never heard anyone be told this. Also on another forum a consultant has said that this question comes up regularly at training days and the answer is always no! It just doesn't make any sense to me that they are not there to promote weight loss but you should be penalised for not having the full amount.

It certainly isn't the 'official line' that you have to Syn your HEX B if you don't have the full amount, more something that some well-meaning but misinformed Consultants tell their groups. If this was true, it would be in the book and in the information online. It isn't. :)

I think the emphasis on having the full amount - or adding, say, a Scan Bran - is more to do with making sure that you have the right amount of nutrients for health reasons.

Okay, so I emailed SW to get the "official line"

Here is the answer

Thank you for your email. If a cereal listed in the Food Optimising book states that it has a scan bran or ryvita that is what would be required to make the item qualify as a Healthy Extra. If you choose not to have the scan bran or ryvita with the cereal ( can be eaten seperatly ) the cereal will not be a Healthy Extra.
The foods listed in the Healthy Extras section help to ensure that you get everything that you need for a healthy balanced diet by providing a daily intake of foods rich in fibre and calcium, vitamins and minerals.

It doesn't exactly say you have to syn it BUT it does say that if you don't have the scan/ryvita then it isn't a healthy extra so can't be counted as such.

Thank you. it sounds like they are saying that it isn't totally healthy if you don't have the extra. x

Yes, it a bit ambiguous but that is how I was reading it - that it's not a HE in that it won't give you the recommended calcium/fibre etc, rather than that it therefore needs to be synned.

Jaylou - is it worth asking for clarification just on that point? I'm quite impressed by how quickly they got back to you!

Shirleen, it's a wider question than just the OSS - say you don't have the full 350ml skimmed milk today, do you need to syn what you did have? So we're trying to get a definitive answer from SW.
