misconceptions of being slim/thin

WMBB

Can't w8 2 b "Dr.WMBB" :)
I was watching this "teen fat club" program a year or so back and one of the people who were sent to the fat club was incredibly thin male, but because of his diet, ie high fat, no vegetables etc etc he had the same effects on his heart and neighbouring arteries as the most obese boy there who weighed 27 stone, aged 17 and actually had higher cholesterol levels.

Do you think as a group of people that we all get sucked into thinking "as long as you're a healthy weight, you're a healthy person over all"?

This ofcourse, isn't true and theres a nasty fact of visceral fat, the fat surrounding organs which is incredibly hard to get rid of and isnt as visable on the outside like flabby fat ( ts more visible in older men as they tend to have more of it and end up with a protruding but 'hard' stomache) this of course was the case with this, thin but veeeeeerrry unhealthy teen male.

I thought this may be good topic to discuss as i think we're all guilty of thinking this at some point. I know I am. I do alot of exercise but thats not because im concerned with my fitness im concerned about looking good in bikini its just so happens its good for me aswell.

What are your thoughts?

We all have an enourmous amount of pressure to be thin and the majority of it comes from tv and glossy mags. The likes of Cheryl Cole, who looks sick in todays news of the world, rather than healthy is 1 perfect example. Were all guilty of thinking "i have to be thin" but why should we? Were more concerned with how we look rather than what we are putting our bodies through.

I know im guilty of it but then i know i want to change the amount of fat im eating and i know i have to lose weight at the same time for the health of my heart.

I often sit and think i have to be thin then i see images im magazines and realise i want to be able to go to the shops and buy a size 14 clothes. Why do i need to be a size 10 or lower? I want to be healthy and look healthy.

exactly and thats the way it should be. but you see lots of skinny girls and even my friends say " im skinny i can get away with eating what ever i want" but you know that later in life they're going to be the ones with heart disease. i think the media, doctors and everyone alike indoctrinate us with the thought " if you lose weight you'll be healthy" when really they emphisis should be on " if you lose weight by eating low fat and eating vegetables you'll be healthy" its the low fat and vegetable part that gets missed out and people think "as long as i only eat a chocolate bar today and lose weight i'll be healthy"

Ive never been swayed by pretty magazine covers.(hence still being over weight) And ever more so these magazines are featuring the scrawny ill looking bodies of women (and some men) who have taken it too far- for what ever reason...drugs, career, failed relationships.

But i dont count the magazines and the people they feature as real..they are just not my reality.

I was happier being thinner and more active in my late teens, so im going for what i know is real to me. Doing more and eating better not just what i want to eat all the time or i would live on birthday cake.

Yes i see that every day of the week. A girl in our team at work eats everything out of the canteen and i once jokingly said even their fruit is deep fried! she just laughed and said it doesnt matter to her because she's skinny and can eat what she wants. I then remind her she is on beta blockers for her heart and she's doing more damage to it but she cant see it. Its such a shame and im happy that i dont want to be like her.

i think the media portrays that thin is healthy etc but people should know what the difference is and that there is a happy medium.

interesting that cheryl cole has been mentioned, i've met her numerous times and we are on first name terms and stuff but she is always eating, her diet is actually quite bad from what i've seen but i think she just has a naturally slim figure and a high metabolism

yeah thats the point she eats crap but is still thin, it doesnt mean her heart is healthy though.

the question is just because 'one' has a high metabolism does that give 'one' a free pass to eat what 'one' wants and not thinking about the health implications?

The simple answer is no. The thinnest people can have heart disease worse than those who are over weight. Just like some over weight people can be fitter than the thinner people.
