How much artificial sweetener do you consume?

I've noticed that I'm getting through almost an entire big jar of Canderel granulated sweetener per week and its really started to worry me. I know there was a bit of a thing in the press some time ago about the potential harm of consuming artificial sweetener and the effects it can have on your health but I can't remember what it is.
How much does everyone use? Am I average? Blimey, do I even overeat on sweetener?????? I'm really fretting about it for some reason!!!! xxx

I finish a jar of Morrison's own brand sweetener in about 2 or 3 weeks, that's using it for coffee/tea and baking/cooking.

A trick I use to cut down on how much I use- if using it to sweeten coffee or tea, taste the coffee/tea before you add any sweetener, then add 1/2 a teaspoon at a time and tasting before adding another, continue until it's right for you. I found I was using 2 teaspoons of sweetener without tasting it and 1 teaspoon of it when I taste it first. I do this when I'm adding it to yoghurt too.

I get through a containe of tesco granulated sweetener in about 3 weeks as I only use it for porridge or (when i rarely make it) pudding rice. Never have it in tea or anything else really.

I have had the same one since the middle of last year... so not a lot really x

I only use it on cereal every morning and in puddings and Scanbran cakes!!! Strangely, I can't stand sweet coffee or tea but I have loads on my cereal - just tipping it on is like an automatic bad habit that I started with sugar and now do with the sweetener. The problem is I love it - I have the biggest sweet tooth in Britain and quite possibly the world! The thing is it can't possibly be good for me ... can it??? xxx

I dont use too much sweetner as i mainly use it for baking or most recently on my pancakes but i dont think its unreasonabe (depending on the size of your jar) that if i drank tea/coffee and ate cereal for a week i would prob use the same!!

xx

Its a 75g jar which is big cos sweetener is very light. My daughter does have some out of it as well but uses relatively little and it lasts me about 10 days! Now I'm really worried!!!!!

I use a lot!
I use the tablet form in my coffee and have about 4 cups a with 4 in each cup. I love sweet coffee!
I also use about 2 or 3 jars of sweetener a month in baking.
No side effects - yet!!

I dont know if this helps or what the FDA recommended amount is - but the internet does spert rubbish a lot so i duno if id believe it or not...

Health and safety studies indicate that it is important to pay attention to the amount of artificial sweeteners an individual consumes in their diet daily. An additional consideration would be the potential for the development of migraine head aches or cancer in years to come. Be cautious of the effects that these substances may have on your body.
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) published a comprehensive report on sugar and artificial sweeteners affirming that artificial sweeteners are safe when used in the amounts specified by the FDA. One does not have to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet, but it is important to be cautious when using sweeteners. These products should be used in moderation. [3][4]

Blimey - thats what I remember reading about a few years ago! I suppose I'd better start cutting down. What did everyone use before sweetener was invented, especially in baking/cooking? Did they just go without??????

What a wonderful world it would be if sugar was free!!!!!!!!! I suppose we can all get a bit hung up with these health scares and warnings - we probably wouldnt eat or drink anything if we listened would we? I think I'm still going to cut down though cos, eating such mega-sweet stuff isnt really teaching me anything about changing my eating habits is it? xxx

true, well maybe cut down the amounts you have on things like suggested above tasting it in between (apart from specifed recipes) and then you should still get some sweetness bt not use the full jar so quickly!

This is true about their scares - chewing gum, dairy products and spray can deodrants are also some of the things that cause cancer. You wouldnt leave your house if you followed all warnings!

Good luck hun

well i dont have too much of the granulated sweetner, but i use approx 7 tablet sweeteners per day in my coffee and goodness knows how much sweetener im having in the fat free yoghurts, diet pops and cordials, sugar free chewing gum etc etc eeekkkk :)

I still haven't used a big jar that I bought in October, lol. But then saying that I dont have any in my tea or coffee, I only use it for strawberries occasionally and in baking. :)

I just use the tablets in my cups of tea. 2 per drink. but some days i can have 10 cups of tea and sometimes i can have none!

I only use splenda or natural sweeteners with stevia in.

Splenda is made from sucralose and not aspartame like most other artificial sweeteners.

there are some concerns about too much consumption of aspartame, but haven't seen any "as bad" claims for sucralose, although the process of making it involves chlorine, so who knows. I tend to use the sugar blend splenda (1 syn per tablespoon) or stevia (the natural sweetener).

Stevia is normally my first choice though and you only need a very tiny amount of it.

Thats true re the sweetener in yoghurts, low sugar drinks etc - I hadnt even thought of that!!! I bet its in most 'diet' foods. It all comes down to the fact that a lot of the time we don't know what we're eating doesnt it? Granulated sweetener doesnt even LOOK edible to me when I think about it!
