Gastric Band

Has anyone ever considered having a gastric band fitted or a gastric bypass operation? One of my colleagues had one 'fitted' last year and has halfed her body weight but it seems a bit extreme to me.

I think TFR is a better method of losing weight although I must say that keeping the weight off is very difficult unless one can realy address the deep underlining psychological factors that have affected many of us who are/have been grossly obese.

Hi scazman, i would never consider it, i am a wimp, lol
Also you would still have the food issues to do deal with after it was removed, that's a massive thing to have surgery and THEN still put the weight back on.
I do know of someone who had it done and yes they looked like a different person but within 6-12 months they are bigger now then before the surgery. They never had any intentions of changing the way they ate they just wanted a quick fix and thought it would take yrs to put the weight back on.
As many of us here agree we can all lose the weight by whatever method but most of us need to address why we can't keep it off, it's so bloody hard isn't it?
I lost 4st in 2008 and then slowly but surely over a yr i put 2 and half st back on, luckily i stopped myself there and only have about 5lb to get back to last goal weight but i have to learn about my issues with food.
So for me diet is better than drastic measures, this time i will def not go back to old eating ways as i will be better prepared, i hope, lol

I would have definitely considered it if Lipotrim hadn't worked. I'm a wimp too by the way but I've got to a stage in my life (I'm 43) when I thought it's now or never. I lost my dad three years ago to pancreatic cancer brought on by diabetes, and at over 18 stones I was a prime candidate for diabetes myself. I feel as though I've sat an my backside indulging myself into an early grave for the past twenty years, and I am determined to use the second half of my life more productively than the first so for me there were/are no no-go areas when it comes to getting healthy.

Hi Scazman,

I am on the LT side of the fence because it is really helping me deal with my mind issues, but to be honest I have had to want to face them and deal with them.

I have a good friend that has had gastric bypass because there is no going back with that, she has now lost 8st and is doing really well, you will be physically sick if you overeat and it becomes not worth it so gaining the weight is almost not a possibility, I think the same that gastric band will only help if you deal with you mind issues and you can do that on LT.

In 1993 I had my stomach stapled - I was also found to be diabetic at the same time. I was nearly 22 stone. In my heart I knew I shouldn't have the surgery and hated myself for not being able to lose the weight normally. Now complications in surgery are not common, but nor are they rare. I was home only two or three weeks before being readmitted with dehydration due to inability to keep even water down. To cut a long miserable story short I was in hospital from April to July, had five endoscopies and more surgery none of which was successful. I was unable to eat and only drank little sips of water. I got weaker and weaker and honestly thought I was going to die. I left my poor husband with three small children to look after in Plymouth while I was in Bristol.
It got to the point where the surgeon was going to reconstruct my bowel and stomach because the entry from one to t'other wouldn't open.
I became quite desperate - but I am a believer in the power of prayer to heal and in my desperation I asked God to heal me. The following evening I was watching the little nurse mixing my evening drink and was thinking how much care she was taking when I could only have a sip to take tablets with! She brought it to me and it looked so shiny and delicious! Clear as a bell I heard in my head "Taste and see that the Lord is good" - twice. I drank and drank until it was gone, pulled out all the pillows used to keep me propped up cos I used to throw-up if I lay down- and went to sleep! I knew I was healed - the Consultant couldn't quite let God have all the glory asking that I call it a "joint effort"! Several doctors and medical students visited me and said they accepted that it was divine intervention.
Now it isn't really important to me what other folks think of this story, I mention it here only to encourage anyone thinking of bariatric surgery to think very very carefully. Yes, I've put some weight back on that's why I'm on here - and its coming off - once and for all.

u look soooooooooooooooooooo young!!!

Jon you like 20 years old!!!! Wow!!!

Well done on your weight loss!! You have done amazingly well and you sound like such a nice guy from all your posts that I have read. I think you will be a success story and maintain your new slim figure, you really seem to have a stong mindset and you have been reading books, keeping fit and active, and I think its a great idea that you are still replacing some meals, I read somewhere you posted you are taking a meal replacement porridge. I think a longer refeed and being active will really stand by you!

You are a true inspiration, i hope you have a wonderful 2nd half of your life! :D xoxoxoxoxox

I think surgery is too drastic a way to do things and I find LT the best solution as it is more "mind over matter" and if done properly can help you make life changing decisions and give you a better attitude for your future eating patterns.

I personally think it is extreme, yet it is becoming a very popular op since Fern Briton got one

I think you should do whatever is right for you, in honesty. If you feel you're left with one solution, and you know 100% in your it's what you want... then go for it!

I've been overweight for a while now... and i have a good friend who's also overweight and trying to slim, and i personally know & see the depression it can bring when you feel like you can't get rid of the weight!

LT seems to be working well for me though, thankfully! And i'll be sticking with it trying to reach my target :)

Good luck on reaching your goal! x

Typo: If you know 100% in your heart!

Surgery has to be the final frontier. AS Stinky said, we have to address the issues of why we overeat. For most people, it should be a case of exhausting all other possibilites first. Not just dabbling for a month or two here and there but committing to a program and getting on with it. TFR is only the start of the process as the maintenance will be the real challenge.

Ello Scazman, long time no speak :)

I was on here some time ago and lost a lot of weight via lipo. Unfortunately was not able to maintain the loss as I had not made the neccersary lifestlye changes and slipped back into my old ways.

Got banded on the 2nd of Feb and so far have lost 22lbs, so far I would reccomend to anybody as it has drastically reduced my portion size and is an amazing weight of contolling my binging. With the band fitted i simply cannot binge.

Everyones journey is unique and this is mine.

I have just had funding approved for surgery. I thought about it & researched my options for a very longtime... I never ever thought I would consider it as an option but since the beginning of the year I have been very focused on changing my WoE & truly believe that I have been given this opportunity to help me finish my weightloss journey.

Plus I have diabetes & wls has helped alot of people keep their BG's under control.

Its not for everyone nor is it a quick fix, it is just another tool in a weight loss journey for some people. x

The Hypno-Band in the Uk is a lot cheaper and is suppose to be good. In the Midlands it is £200-£300 quid.

I have an appointment to see my surgeon next month. I am doing exante. If this can work I am going to tell him I have changed my mind.

My aunt had a bypass in December. Last time I saw her (about 3 months ago) she had lost near 6 stone. After her bypass she lost a lot of blood and had to have a transfusion. But, she does not regret it and is very happy with her weight loss. So, a very personal choice :) X

Hey there guys,
Interesting topic. For me...a definite no. I know we all feel helpless and unhappy with our weight. There are times we'd love for it just to go without us having to 'do' anything. I feel that gastric surgery doesn't change any of the real, underlying issues with food. I'm not sure that any diet really does but at least they require will power and are empowering. For me, gastric bands are an 'easy' way out which isn't easy at all...and could be potentially very dangerous. I'm not judging people who have them... being overweight is so depressing. I just think there should be more support for people to lose it in a healthy, conventional manner

Is it me or are we getting confused her with the band and bypass?

I asked my dr so a while ago about a band as i have meeds that I take for a rare condition, yes the near said you will put on weight....she wasn't wrong!!

Now I have been to the dentist as i am scared of them lol and was told I was too big to be knocked out...the shame and anguish that has caused me is untold!!

I have lost four stone prior to these meeds...love the eating healthy etc, go to the gym and the weight is xfeepingon.

Now...today....I have decided that I am going to research the band more to help me.....you do get to a time in hour life and need help.

So anyone who has had the op and I believe there is follow up...I would love for you to contact me please...Be it good or bad...thanks.

For those that don't like the idea....don't read the posts...for those that want or need to help or support those that are thinking about it...then well done!
