SW whilst on holiday

Not evil at all
Hi guys

I'm going on holiday in 5 weeks to Amsterdam and starting to think about how I'm going to stay on plan whilst I'm gone. I've really got no clue.. any tips? I'm not sure what I'm allowed to take with me food wise as I haven't been abroad for about 12 years and also got no idea what the food over there is going to be like. Do I just go off plan for the week or can I take a flexi syn week?

Thanks :)

You're not allowed to take fresh food stuffs abroad generally. If you are eating out all the time then I would just try to stick as close to plan as possible rather than stay completely on track.
Food in Amsterdam is as varied as any city - with food from different nationalities.
Breakfasts are continental eg cold meats and cheeses..............with lots of pastries too! Red days might be the easiest to try to stick close to.
I'm going to Fuerteventura for 5 days All Inclusive in 2 weeks time and think I'll just be fairly relaxed - I'm in this for the long haul.
My plan is to have lots of fruit and salads and veg but I don't think I'll be counting syns each day - I'll be more active than usual walking and swimming - it's just damage limitation for me :angeldevil:

As debs154 has said, breakfasts are usually buffets, with choices of cheese and ham and breads and crispbreads and fruit. Perfectly possible to make a sensible breakfast from that. If your hotel has a website, does it show a breakfast menu? It might be worth checking to see. I seem to remember one place I stayed in in Amsterdam where there was a bowl of eggs and a gadget for boiling them the way you liked them.

Amsterdam is a very cosmopolitan city and you will find food from all over the world. Traditional Dutch food can be a bit stodgy, but it is delicious. There is a lot of Indonesian food - a speciality is something called nasi goreng, which is a lot of small dishes which keep coming and coming!

There are lots of sandwich and snack bars and automats for lunch. Dutch cheese is excellent - better than the Edam and Gouda that we usually get here.

There is a good, if slighly quirky, guide to Amsterdam here
Amsterdam travel guide - Wikitravel
which is worth reading for a bit of background.

Remember to take comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot, and many of the streets are cobbled.

If you are going in five weeks time, the Keukenhof Gardens will be open. You can get there by train and bus, or there are lots of coach tours which go there - your hotel will have details. It is really worth a visit - the flowers are quite spectacular.

Don't know if you are already following EE plan but you might find it easier to do this for the duration of the holiday, there is more choice for you.

I travel abroad quite a lot for work, and usually take non fresh food stuff in my suitcase such as:

Alpen Light Bars
Ryvita Mini
Sugar Free Squash
Mikado Sticks

As stated above, most hotels do a breakfast buffet, and I usually stick to things like fresh fruit, low fat yoghurts and soft boiled eggs with wholemeal bread for breakfast.

I find the evening meals the hardest, as you don't always know how things have been cooked, and if the staff don't speak good english, it is very hard to ask.

I went AI in Fuerteventura last year for a week and managed to lose 2lb. It is much easier with a buffet style evening meal, as you can pick what you like and there is always usually fresh fruit and loads of salad.

Hope you have a good holiday

That's good to hear Slinkydreams - although the AI wine or beer in the afternoon might be a problem!:party0036:

Some good advice! Thanks! We're room only - no breakfast or dinner, so will be eating out for every meal. I'm going to make as healthy as possible choices.. fruit/yoghurts for breakfast, wholemeal bread sandwiches, pastas for lunch and dinners will probably be more pasta or a meat + veg dish. avisk - I've been told about the nasi goreng and we're planning on having that for my birthday dinner (going over there to celebrate my 21st) and every other night we'll be trying to stick to SW :D

Not going to take any food with me - need room in my suitcase for clothes! :D
