does anyone else have sleep problems? for about the last 10 years i havent slept properly. i go to sleep no problem but i dont get into that deep refreshing sleep i stay in dream sleep all night. i wake up about 20 times a night tossing and turning. ive recently changed doctors and finaly he thinks i have sleep apnea. at the moment i am just wiped out. i cant concentrate i get irritated by the simplist of things, sometimes i cant even talk properly cause the words just come out all jumbled up. just wanted to know if anyone else out there has this condition or has had it and now doesnt have it if that makes sense lol. im gratefull for any advice.

I never had sleep apnea, but during University I was diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety, which came with a side effect of insomnia. Add to that a physical manifestation of the depression in a painful back and it wasn't a pretty combo. Thankfully when I started to work through my depression, sleep got a bit easier and now I'm OK sleeping (apart from tonight as I'm stuck in a hotel room with two friends snoring their heads off. If it gets any worse I'm going to kip outside the door I think!). I am not suggesting for a minute that either of you are depressed, but just be aware that sleep problems can be connected to something else, so if you've any other niggles or questions about your health at the moment I would get them checked out at the same time.

I fluxoriate with my sleep, at times I can sleep for hours and other times very little. I try my best to have a bedtime rountine and also read which can help switch off. I also suffer with anxiety so I always keep a pad close bye so I can jott down concerns

In the last week i've been having major difficulties sleeping, tossing and turning and looking at the clock all night! I'm sure the other night I was still awake at 6:30 and had to get up for work at 7:30 :(.

Before recently i've never had any problems, ive always been able to sleep pretty much anywhere lol!! So I sympathise with how horrible it is!! :( x

Interesting lil bit of info tho...I study psychology and we had a module on sleep...turns out we dont need nearly as much sleep as we get! There were case studies about people who had been awake for like 100 hours, and when the psychologists tested them...their cognitive and memory functions werent affected! I think we actually sleep as much as we do because we are socially used to it, it seems our bodies can function without it for a very long time...which raises the question what is the true purpose of sleep??

There was one lady who slept for a few hours every 3 days...she said it was because she just didnt like wasting time sleeping and just liked to do stuff all the time??? They studied her for ages and they couldnt find anything medically/psychologically wrong with her, and she also seemed quite content! Strange!!

Plus some animals we are closely related to only sleep for an hour a day, because if they sleep for any longer they are at massive risk from predators! This has lead a lot of psychologists to think we sleep as much as we do (and at night), because originally hiding at night meant we had less chance of being attacked??

I'm going on now really, I just find it so interesting! x

I usually sleep like the dead - it's waking up that I have the problem with (three alarm clocks!). But occasionally I do have a problem sleeping and then I take Valerina tablets from Boots. They are a herbal remedy containing valerian, and they aren't addictive at all. Usually a couple of nights taking them sorts me out.

If you do have sleep apnoea then your doctor should refer you to a sleep clinic. A friend of mine had problems for years, and no-one took it seriously, then she was finally referred to the sleep clinic in Cambridge and she is a changed person!

whilst doing my Psychology degree at moment, one thing I have learnt is everytihng is average and there is no such thing as a set forumla to how we 'humans' oberates :)

I think I lost the recipe for sleep the minute I hit the menopause . I've tried everything! Lavendar oil, nytol, herbal nytol, valerian, (disgusting!) warm baths, getting rid of the radio alarm (the electric field can interfere with your brains circuits apparently) meditation cds, and hypnosis cds. Oh and exercise doesn't make any difference. But if I go to stay with my son, I sleep all night!

So what is different when you go to stay with your son? Do you feel safer because there is a young person in the house? Is it quieter? Is the bed more comfortable?

If you could pin this down, you might be on your way to solving your sleeping problems.
