Cheaper alternatives!

I thought I would start a thread, so people can list down any cheaper alternatives of things, such as Alpen Light Bars etc... That arethe same syn value or syn free etc...

I mean, I buy the Alpen bars but when they're not on offer, they can be expensive!

Now I was wondering about the sda alternatives, because some of them look yummy!

If you can contribute, brilliant :)

not sure hun but i will be watching for replies

Just be careful to check that the alternatives are equal syn-wise, or that they are on the list of healthy extras, as sometimes something that seems the same as another brand can differ quite a bit!

We were wandering around Asda last night with our syn free branded book. However, didn't think of looking at cereal bar options - so bought Alpen Lights bars for my breakfast today as I never get my B choices in!

I echo this!! I went shopping yesterday and they didn't have any Muller lights so I bought some which were 0% fat and looked the same from Nom Dairy - I've been using them as I would use Muller lights and checked the Syns out of curiosity - they're 1.5/2 Syns depending on the flavour!

So, flexible Syns for me until WI tomorrow but definitely CHECK your substitutes!

I really like Morrison's Lemon Curd cereal bars - cheaper than Alpens and only 3.5 syns but you can't use them as a HEB. Don't like any of the other flavours though!

If you go to Tesco groceries online, they often have a link next to products to cheaper alternatives. I know it only shows what's available at Tesco but it could help a little

Thanks I didn't realise they did that. What a fantastic idea somebody had........must have been a woman:p

Even if the syn values are the same some products are HEb's for a reason (fibre levels) so using an alternative that isn't on the list isn't sticking to the plan. I stock up on anything SW when it's on offer! It's why I have 10 huge tins of kidney beans in my garage!

The only thing I can't find to stock up on even at full price is Nimble WHite :(

The white chocolate Oaty Bars ar £1 at the moment in our pound shop so bought 5 packets. if you haven't tried them they are very chocolatey but you can only have one as a healthy extra.

the big Asda next to us has White nimble (but not the little store). I pick up a couple of loaves each time I am in to keep in the freezer - sooo yummy!!

i agree alpen light bars are quite dear when not on offer about 1.70something a box in my local asda. but i often find them cheaper in random shops. i know farmfoods for quite a while did the apple and sultana oones for 1pound a box but they are now up to 1.25 still not too bad

oh and last week i was in savers (think they are a nationwide chain theres loads near me - discount store like semichem or superdrug type shop) and they do the choc orange ones for a pound a box.

farmfoods also have the white chocolate oaty weetabix bars for a pound a box and one of them counts as a HEB

its always useful to know where other people find SW bargains lol :)

Is there a cheap alternative to quorn?

I am loving the sound of the Morrisons lemon curd bars!! Are they at all similar to the lemon hi-fi bars?

Did you know that the SW website has a big list of all the HEXs?! It lists a lot of the supermarket brand cereal bars there!X

Is there a cheap alternative to quorn?

i find quorn pretty cheap esp when compared to meat!

asda do the frozen bags of quorn mince and chicken pieces 2 for 2 pound! i find a bag made into a meal does 4 portions so thats pretty good! :)

and the cheapest place i have found for quorn sausages is farmfoods they do a box of 6 for a pound, same price for Linda McCartney veggie sausages too but they are synned.

You could try TVP (textured vegetable protein) from a health food shop. I used to get it when I was a vegetarian and things like quorn didn't exist. It used to only be available as a dried product that you needed to soak (and add flavour to). But looking at syns online, it can also be bought frozen. It isn't the greatest taste or texture, but it is okay to bulk out food with. I seem to remember it was very cheap...
