Training as a life coach?

There wasn't really an appropriate thread to post this question in, so I thought I would post it on 'home' territory especially as there are CDCs on this thread who might have the knowledge I seek!

My question is, does anyone know how you go about training to be a life coach? Are there accredited courses as opposed to non-credit bearing ones? I am thinking of a career change and would like to include life coaching in a portfolio of personal and well-being services, as I have had some very good feedback from friends and even from my boss on my potential in this area. I have also had managerial life coaching myself and found it very helpful, but also realised that it wan't a mysterious art either!

Any help, knowledge, tips gratefully received!

Thanks

Brill- thanks Mini- you are as ever the 'Fount of All Knowledge'!!

In fact you should have FOAK written under your sig! So long as non one misreads it ROFL!

Hi, Kathy,

I am a Life Coach and NLP Practitioner. I completed my Life Coach training a couple of years ago through The Coaching Academy. It is tremendous! and Life Changing! There is a free introductory course with Newcastle but my colleagues have said that there is no comparison between the two. I have no experience with Newcastle, so I cannot comment. However, there is now an introductory (free) program through the Coaching Academy, as well. If you would like to discuss this, I would be pleased to help. Certainly, the association with so many like-minded, optomistic people during the training is like a fuel injection! I sometimes feel like I am 'holding my breath' until I get to my Coaching Circle meeting once a month. And, like any of these programs, you, yourself, are coached during the learning process. Fantastic. It is forward thinking, and solution focussed. And each coaching session is time just-for-you. Have a look at their site, if you like...here's the link:

Go for it!

Hi Tex
Thanks for that great info- I did a web search and found the coaching academy, but there were so many others its bewildering. Its great to find somebody who has experience and can make a recommendation (bit like the diets really!). I will look into them more closely- if I have any other questions do you mind if I PM you- will try not to be a pain though!

BTW I know what yu mean about being around positive people- that's why this site is so good for motivating me. Being round whingers would see me steaming towards the crisps!

Very interesting, this is something I've been considering myself. Just signed up for the free newsletter and will certainly think about taking it further.

Hi there

As Mini said I qualified as Life Coach last October. Initially I did my training with Coaching and Mentoring International, but they were taken over last year by The Coaching Academy with whom I completed my diploma.

As Life Coaching isn't a recognised profession as such yet, there are no accredited courses but the Diploma course with The Coaching Academy is accredited by the OCN (Open College Network) at Level 3.

I hope this helps, but by all means PM me if you'd like any further information.

Good luck! :)

:thankyou: Thanks Texas and Sharon! Getting very excited about this potential change in direction- am going to do some research over the weekend and will pump you for insider information after that. Its very kind of you both to offer advice.

The Coaching Academy looks great, but I'm wary that no costs are mentioned for the diploma courses - having worked in sales I hate it when people don't mention prices as it always seems like there's a hidden catch when they do that. Care to share?

Hi, Cerulean, (great colour BTW)

When I did it, they had a financial package that gave interest free credit. I can't remember the cost, however. It seemed like a lot before I started the course, but after the first weekend, I got more than I paid in results.

Hi, I work part time as a coach too. I did my training with Coach U which helps with accreditation with the International Coaching Federation. A lot of my clients are from the States so I chose a qualification they understood.

It's worth calling people like the Coaching Academy and Coach U they often offer a free class or consultation so that you can get a feel for them. You are going to be working hard so it's important that you really like them a lot.

The courses are all about the same price and very expensive but don't let it put you off they all help with the costs in terms of finance but it is about £3000 over a few years.

Good luck, it's a very rewarding job!

Hi, Cerulean, (great colour BTW)

Thanks! I love blues!
I figured it would be about that - most involved NLP practitioner courses cost in that region so I figured it would be similar...good that they have the payment options though - I shall certainly look into it!
