agar agar

I AM A WEMITT x
Has anyone used this?

Apparently it can be used as a thickener for soups. I am looking for an alternative thickener for stews etc so if it works for soup I figure it will work for other things.

Its classed as a superfree so would be great if anyone who has used it can recommend it for my stews.

Thanks

I have to admit I've never used or bought any agar agar.

I normally use lentils to thicken my soups and stews or maybe some gravy granules or cornflour - don't forget to syn these those.

Thanks donnie, I usually use gravy granules but the syns soon add up, I dont eat a lot of gravy myself but once its in will draining it off save me the syn value.

Was trying to find a syn free substitute :D I can never get cornflour to thicken anything maybe i'm using it wrong

May just try it in a chunky veg soup and see what happens.

Thanks

Do you just stir it in circes without doing anything to it first, will it work ok in a slow cooker.

Thanks

I don't know about thickening it up but I use chicken bovril for my stock for soups and it works wonderfully. Also over cooking the potatoes (if you're using them) makes them come apart and adds consistency to the soup.... don't know if that's any help!

thanks GWE I have started to use stock cubes more as they are free and thats working a treat, but they don't thicken it as I would like and if I can, I avoid putting pots in as i'm following red, but will admit to putting a few in sometimes as the rest of the family like them. :D

Yep just sprinkle on the mash a little at a time while stirring until you get the consistency you want.
