Rant ..... Ignorant ar***s

I am one of the 63336
We moved in to a new flat last weekend. We knew there was a youngish lad living upstairs but no idea who was living downstairs. A French couple, teachers, had lived in this flat before us.

About 5am Monday morning my son came in to our bedroom to say he could hear noises - he's at the back of the house. I opened his window and thought the noises were coming from outside.

Just after 10am I saw a community nurse standing ouside and then an ambulance pulled up outside and then a lot of banging started. I spoke to the nurse who told me an elderly lady lives in the flat and she had fallen over behind the kitchen door so they were having to carefully break down the door to get to her. They got her out around 11am and took her off to hospital. (We feel really bad that we didn't realise the noises were her calling for help).

I left for work about 11.30am and a woman was leaving the flat downstairs. She lives in one of the buildings next door. She was telling me the lady downstairs is 93 years old. The community nurse comes in twice a day and then this neighbour pops in twice a day. She also said that the elderly lady is fallign more and more frequently both at home and out.

She then went on to tell me how the couple who lived here before objected to the elderly lady having her telly on loud - she's hard of hearing. Apparently the only thing she watched on the telly would be Murder She Wrote or something similar of an afternoon and then the early evening news. The French couple kept putting notes through her door telling her if she didn't turn her telly down they would report her to the police and the police would confiscate her telly and fine her.

Being elderly she let them intimidate her and stopped watching the telly. If she knew they were in she would get a book and sit quietly in her back room so she didn't disturb them.

Later that evening there was a knock at the door and it was the French guy wondering if any post had arrived for him. My partner answered the door as I knew who it was and was still spitting feathers at the way they had treated the elderly lady.

Well, the French guy remarked to my partner 'You are luckier than us. The woman downstairs is deaf and had her television on loud. We put a stop to that' and you could tell by the sound of his voice he was proud with himself (I was standing in the kitchen eavesdropping).

My partner commented that it must be a cultural difference. The other guy enquired what he meant to which my partner replied 'In this country we treat our elders with proper respect and don't bully them' and slammed the door shut in his face.

Now, please don't think for one minute that we have anything against anyone of any other nationality than ourselves. We have many continental friends but this man needed putting in his place.

I know loud noises from adjoining properties can be frustrating but it's hardly like she was partying at all hours etc.

How DARE they intimidate and bully an elderly (93 years old for heavens sake!) woman to the extent she feels she can't enjoy a little bit of telly in case she upsets them! No disrespect meant, but she can't have much longer left so let her enjoy it.

She must have been born in around 1916 making her one of that generation of women who kept this country going during World War 2 etc. She would have been around the age many of us are when the current Queen came to the throne which illustrated her age!

B***dy ignorant a***es!!!

This really upset me - I really don't like it when people intimidate anyone, let alone an elderly lady!

Sadly, a lot of people would have done the same - whatever their age or nationality :-(

If I was living close to someone who was in this lady's position, I'd be offering her help/company not making her fear enjoying small things in life like watching TV. Heck, I always ask my neighbours if they need anything if I see them on the way to town/supermarket because it's a drive away - and they're young and able.

And even if her telly was on it's loudest setting, they could have turned theirs up or just coped with it - it was only for an hour.

I agree, things can progressively wear on people and small things become huge. But you use common sense and decency and act according to the situation. She should have shown the police their notes threatening her - grrr!

Luckily now she won't have this to deal with - and I hope she gets well soon x

It realldy does upset me to hear about things like this, this bloke really sounds like an absoloute ignorant bum. for use of better words..

Atleast she has you living above her now, and canfully start enjoying her telly! - and i expect her flat. I hope she begins to feel comfortable in her own home now. x

We've given a Christmas card to the lady next door to pass on which introduces us to the lady downstairs and saying we hope that when she is back out of hospital she will enjoy her flat, television, radio etc whatever she wants, she won't have any complaints from us.

What horrible people! We have families kids either side of us making noise until about 10 in the evening, we dont complain because people are entitled to make noise in their own home, obviously not wild parties til the wee hours every night. Normal everyday noise like the tv and etc is just life. I hope they move somewhere where they get intimidating notes through their door see how they like it.

What nice people you are - I hope that she is able to come out of hospital and enjoy living in her flat again, and that you become the best of friends. We have a lot to learn from older people, if we are patient and listen to them.

Hi Sue,

I hope your rant has helped you get some of your frustration out. Glad to hear they have moved out and YOU have moved in! I take it all post for the previous occupier will now be returned to sender, that will teach them!

I agree with all the comments on here, but unfortunatley I think us Brits as a nation also have a lot to learn about helping neighbours etc, elderly or young. Of course all you guys on here are the exception but I think we all have heard of bad situations, on the TV etc about our lack of neighbourly compassion.

Just a suggestion Sue, but when she is well can you find out if she is entitled to a hearing aid or even a headphone of some sort, and maybe also find out if her tv has subtitles. Just suggestions that may make things easier for her.

I actually have sympathy for my neighbours as we have two young boys up at the crack of dawn each day and then the occasional shouting from me, yelling at the boys, and we also have chickens in our garden as well. Fortunatley we all get on well and I try to regularly give our eggs to the immediate neighbours.

A very merry christmas to you and your neighbour and I hope she is home soon to meet her LOVELY new neighbours.

Best regards

Thank you for your concern with this elderly lady and for intending to be a better neighbour to her when she gets out of hospital....

I say this because my mother is 90 years old and has been having problems with nuisance neighbours, thankfully they were finally evicted last month, but she is only just beginning to settle down again.

So well done you.

I'm so glad her neighbours are gone. It's so terribly sad that people can be made to feel so isolated by the actions of others.

We did get some satisfaction as they have moved just down the road from where we have moved from and they are getting rain blown under their french doors which front the sea :D

how awful - some people dont realise how thier actions can affect others!

Im happy that Mrs 93 has lovely neighbours now! x

We've just heard that the lady is coming home some time today and that social servces came round yesterday to double check all her chairs, toilet seats, bed etc are easily useable for her.

Thank heavens she is ok xx
