Mirena Coil

Hi Ladies,

Do any of you have a mirena?

Do you still get periods? I have the sympathy pains and just a tiny bleed which usually lasts 1/2 a day and comes every few weeks. Also spots.
I thought the mirena was supposed to make the bleeding heavier and more painful!?

REM

I do! It was put in after my last (3rd) baby as I had coleostasis (sp?) when I was pregnant and as a result I'm no longer allowed to take the pill. I had a bit of bleeding after it was inserted and then almost nothing for about a year. Since then, my periods have come back. However, they aren't as heavy as they used to be and I very rarely get any cramping. I think that for most people, they get very little if any bleeding etc (because it releases hormones to reduce the thickness of the lining rather than just preventing implantation like the old fashioned coils).

As a contraceptive, I couldn't be more pleased as I can literally forget about it for years. Oh, and my husband has no complaints about the 'strings'.

Nope, nothing but a bit of spotting every few months. This is annoying more than anything as I can't predict when it will happen. I still get bloating and emotional but only get occasional cramps.

I Had a Mirena and had no periods at all.
When I had a copper coil before that my periods were very heavy and long so I was advised to have a Mirena to make my periods lighter.

This is my 3rd mirena

1st - no periods and no PMt and no bloating! lots of hair loss though

2nd - hmmm, resulted in the birth of my dear son :O

3rd - i get half a day spotting, much bloating, lots of periods pain and horrendous moods, spots & hair loss!

wow sounds par for the course then!
Thanks girls you have put my mind at rest :)

I get loads of hair loss and wondered whether it was due to the diet and recent baby but maybe it's the mirena!!

Cheers - have a Super Weekend! :)

Ladies, if any of you are 100% sure you dont want any more children, I would recommend having an ablation... I suffered with horrendous periods for 30 years, and I just had enough and I should have had it done years ago. Its amazing and has given me my life back. I wont go into details about it here, but if anyone wants to chat to me about it, just PM me....

I was actually booked in for one of those this time last year. However, once I scoured the net for feedback I pulled out of the surgery (only a 30 something percentage have no periods afterwards and the younger you are (I.e. under 45) the less likely it is to work (I'm 36)). What really concerned me is having to carry on using other contraception as you can still get pregnant but would likely be ectopic. As I said in my earlier post I can't take the pill anymore and would of course no longer be able to use the mirena after an ablation. All in all, I decided against it.

I had the Mirena and had no periods at all with it for 7 years.

It didn't suit me at all I had the worse end of the list side effects such as hair loss, bad skin, anxiety and depression and static weight (couldn't budge from 16st 6lb for some reason). I ended up becoming a little recluse but my GP didn't pick up on it and just kept giving me anti-depressents and blamed my job for it .. eventually a female GP that did my smear put 2+2 together and recommended removal and I was a different woman within 6 weeks lol! I did a lot a research and there seem to be a little pattern that the worse side effects seem to come when people had no bleeding at all, not sure why but maybe the body just needs to have a little bleed for some reason :)

My only advise with any hormone contraception is if you feel something isn't 100% try changing for something else and persist till you find something that works for you - I wish I had (although I wish it had worked well for me as I loved no periods :p)

I was due to have a hysterectomy in Dec 2007. My gynae then suggested the Mirena as a last option to try and i had it inserted under general anaesthetic in January 2008 (my insides are yukky, GA not normally required).

Its been fantastic. I love it. My periods still come monthly but are very very light. I did suffer with mild depression after about 8 months on it cos i am very sensitive to progestogen but i am now on Fluoxetine (20mgs)a day and its done the job. I feel fab and can still lose weight.

On my second, only bleeding came in the period "between", as I had to wait for hospital appt (my cervic too small and very high, GP couldn't fit it), no side effects, no bloating and no pregnancies :D RESULT!! :D

I, sadly still have really heavy days and often have to "double " my sanitary protection. I had the copper coil before and was about the same. Do have hair loss but do not like the pill so will have to stick it out.

I did have weight gain with it and I was very down and teary for the first 6 months.
