'Fat rights' allow obese people to eat themselves to death

A few weeks ago, Lionel Shriver (author of We Need to Talk About Kevin) filed a piece for Standpoint magazine in which she wrote, with some reluctance, that her brother was “eating himself to death” and weighed 24 stone. (He was 5ft 7in tall.)

Hmm, how can you legislate about eating?

Some of the comments under that blog sicken me, if this is the so-called "moral support" we're apparently in need of, they can stick it. Some people seem to find it hard to differentiate between moral support and bullying.

In the blog itself, I do agree with the fact that people need more support, but I know that in some families people don't just support. It's more like pressuring or constant jibing about people's weight. Most of the time it's NOT "gentle nudging" that's offered, it's nagging, which I for one don't respond well to!

"As a rule I always work to the principle that it is only help if the recipient has clearly and unequically asked for help. Everything else is unwanted interference (children and those incapable of making their own decisions may need unwanted interference, but that doesn’t negate the principle)."

I agree with the above comment from a reader (hope I'm allowed to quote comments!)

I usually don't bother to read the arsehole comments but I did and wish I hadn't. The truth is, people will only change when THEY want to and no amount of cajoling, bribing or bullying will work and could well exacerbate the problem.

We all KNOW how unhealthy it is to be overweight but some people need to hit rock bottom before they can find a solution.
