DO YOU REMEMBER.....

Slow but sure....
I started a 'Do You Remember' thread a couple of weeks ago and it proved to be very popular - so I thought I would start off another and see how you like this one.....

Do You Remember Sunday Afternoon Teatime's....

When my children were young we used to have tea on Sunday afternoon watching 'Worzel Gummidge' he was a great favourite in our house.

We used to have toasted crumpets dripping with 'best' butter or cheese on toast, and fig roll biscuits (love em!) custard cream biscuits (my son's favourite even to this day) and I usually made a Victoria Sponge with strawberry jam and fresh cream.....and lashing of cuppa's to go with it all.

And we would round it all off with 'Bullseye' and Jim Bowen, "You can't beat a bit of Bully"!!! LOL......

Bliss!!!! lovely memories.

Cruncy tinned salmon sandwiches. A packet mix cheese cake or lemon meringue pie, and Worzel Gummidge, Black Beauty, Stig ofthe Dump on the TV. That was when I was a child. I must admit my children always have roast dinner at Sunday tea time. Usuallt stick it on and go out for the afternoon.

My Mum in law still does traditional sunday teas like that, they are gorgeous!!

I remember the 'Onedin Line' on a sunday night, My mum always did roast beef for lunch and we would use up the joint on sandwiches for supper whilst watching it.And my hubby still cant watch 'last of the summer wine' he says it used to be on sunday eves and that meant school the next day!!

OOH and Poldark!!!

when i was younger it was get up watch little house on the prairie (sp) then land of the giants then rawhide, then it was roast dinner time then i had to do my homework then have a bath ready for school in the morning, then i would think of all the things i done wrong in the week and have to confess to my parents to make me feel better then i got a crack for dong wrong lol

I remember Sundays were the best. Worzel Gummage was on in the late morning when I was a kid (well, I was always having breakfast lol). I remember I always came down in my nightwear, sit in front of the fire with porridge (lots of sugar as a treat) and a hot chocolate. We'd often go for a family walk afterwards and then Sunday roast. I remember bullseye - loved it!

I loved The Onedin Line & Poldark.

Poldark was repeated on UK History in the Summer and I really enjoyed it all over again, I wish they would repeat The Onedin Line too.

And Penmarric - I've read Susan Howarth's book and I'd love to see the series again. ....

Oh yes the inevitable crumpets and butter! (toasted on a coal fire), celery, stood in it's own celery shaped glass jar. I couldn't eat it for years afterwards. And tinned peaches with evaporated milk! EVERY SUNDAY! My mother was a creature of habit!
Yes on tv, the Onedin Line, and later, The Brothers, Howard's Way and All Creatures Great and Small. Was Tenko on a Sunday?

I brefriended an elderly lady who lived a few doors away from us when I was about 10. She seemed very lonely, never married or had kids & most family had passed away. She invited me over for Sunday tea, and it became a regular thing every Sunday for 7 years!

She would always give me tea in a proper cup, 2 ham rolls and a cream bun. It was the same every Sunday! And I loved it! We would sit & watch The Clothes Show then Antiques Roadshow. Then I would go home after she had given me all her 5ps (she didnt like these "new small pennies!!") and a few choc bars.

We didn't have a television when I was a child, so my memories are more about radio programmes. I loved children's radio. Later in the evening I remember "Sing Something Simple" - oh dear, I hated that!!! - and Radio 4 plays which I usually enjoyed.

Salad made with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, boiled egg and beetroot, which got onto everything else and spoiled it as far as I was concerned.

Someone mentioned crunchy tinned salmon sandwiches - oh how I hated it when the bones were left in!!

I remember a huge row with my mother who was cross with me for wasting food because I cut the fat off the ham! (Actually I won that argument because my response to being told that if I was going to eat the ham I had to eat the fat was to refuse to eat ham at all!)

Tinned peaches or pears and tinned cream - I can't believe we actually ate that stuff.

Oh dear, that all sounds a bit miserable, but it wasn't really. It's just that the food wasn't that good (until I took over the cooking - but that's another story!).

Salmon sandwiches for tea followed by tinned fruit and carnation cream. Then settle down to classic sunday serial, black beauty or the railway children etc. Always watched the brothers with greasy ken, onedin line and poldark, all creatures great and small (named my son after Calum in that), then bed. Those sunday evening programmes were wonderfull. Now its doc martin and kingdom for me.

Judi, you were posh having a proper jar for the celery, we used a jam jar, and my mum still does lol.

My mother was probably the role model for Hyacinth Bucket :p I wish I had the celery jar now, quirky!

My Mum still has the celery jar. She also has an onion sauce jar complete with crying eyes on it. She also has a little wooden pot and spoon for the melon ginger, and serrated grapefruit spoons. Was she posh?

Lynda

I have a Pickled onion ceramic pot with crying eye's - but I haven't put it out on the table for years, I usually just put the jar of onions out....I'm so common, LOL....

Judi I LOVED Tenko! I'm sure it was on a sunday night, although I happened to catch an episode a couple of years ago on a Freeview channel, & it is now SO obvious it was filmed in a sand bunker or quarry in Britain somewhere!!!

Oh I loved Tenko as well! I know what you mean when you see it now, they are sprayed with water to make them look hot (ha ha ha) .

For Sunday tea it was usually sardines on toast (also known as little fishies on toast), roes on toast, dripping on toast or crumpets - my parents obviously had some sort of obsession with toast!!!
:)
