Cambridge is planning to enter a 40-person team into the world’s biggest half-marathon, The BUPA Great North Run 2007. The team will consist of staff, counsellors and clients all of whom will be taking the challenge to run 13 miles through the streets of Newcastle on Saturday 29th September, in aid of Diabetes UK.

The entrance fee is £50 (of which Cambridge will contribute a percentage – yet to be confirmed) and each runner is encouraged to raise a minimum sponsorship of £400.

The marathon first began in June 1981 since which time over 650,000 people have crossed the finish line at South Fields. By the end of the 2005 half-marathon, a total of 8,027,758 miles had been run since the race began, that’s about 308 times around the world!

There are limited spaces available!

If you are interested, please contact Kerensa Preedy-Houston (PR Dept) on 01536 748630 or via email on [email protected] by April 6th 2007.

I am doing the run and would be great to get as many "Miniminers" as we can.

If anyone is worried about running it then I can assure you I will be gently walking round like I did for the South Run last year and you are more than welcome to walk with me and laugh all the way round!

Hi mike, I did the Silverstone half lthe other week and was on to do the London in April but after falling down the stairs last week and breaking my foot I'm now out :( Do you know if we have to raise money? I know it sounds stingy but I have been raising loads of money for the London one (which has now had to be defered) so would feel cheeky trying to raise even more for another one? :) xxx

Hiya

Not sure but I do think they are keen to raise as much as they can for Diabetes UK as obviously the diet works really closely in the diabetic field.

Give Kerensa a mail and see what she says.

What a great idea, though at the moment there is no way on earth I could manage this.
Maybe next year we could do a meet and incorporate the walk too......! just an idea.......! hopefully I would be up to it by then. Even though Im not a cd`er....lol

Hiya Mike, I would love to do something like this but I have never tried running more than about 3k, My work this year has diabetes UK as its main charity and Im really interested in it. Do you have any idea about training etc??

I'd def be up for it, will only be two weeks after marathon, but should be okay for it, done it couple of times before and love it... will email them :D

Hello..........its actual Sunday 29th (not the Saturday) - my typo in the original post!

They would like each runner to aim to rasie £400.

You do not have to run the entire way - a big of a job/walk combination is fine. We will have various levels of fitness amongst our group.

There are still a few places available - please email me on [email protected] and put GNR 2007 in the title please!

Cheers, Kerensa

Erm, as a resident of the toon, I'm not up for the run itself (way too many issues about my lack of sporting prowess!!) but am happy to have a vodka frenzy afterwards lol!

must be the teenage rocker in me but when I read the title of this thread I thought what challenge involves Guns 'n Roses!!

Kudos for everyone that takes part!

Great idea!! Too far north for us (we live in devon!) but hope you get lots of interest!

To anyone thinking about doing this - go for it.. I have the most horrendous knee after an accident a couple of years ago, I started running last november and ran my first half mara last month... It is an AMAZING feeling crossing that finishing line!!

Hoping to do plymouth half at the end of may and torbay half at the end of june, I've re-injured my knee though a couple of weeks ago so not sure yet, fingers crossed!!

Anyone else watching the flora london marathon today and dreaming? Icemoose - would you ever enter the FLM?

I've never run in my life, so this year is out of the question, but I'd love to lose my weight and train to do plymouth next year!! (ooh and maybe torbay too if i start liking this fitness malarkey!!) Maybe I'll join you!!

Now there's something for me to aim for :D

You'd be more than welcome to MPF!! As I said, I only started running 5 months before I did my first half mara, that first day I ran for 1 min, walked for 2, repeated for 20 minutes and honestly thought I was going to die.. (And regretted the fact I entered a half marathon!!).. 5 months later crossing that finish line was the proudest moment of my life!! PM me if ya want some tips on starting up, can give you some good training routes/tips/places to get shoes from etc!

xx

It sounds good - a fitness goal to work towards. Is it for both men and women? Maby can get my hubby to do it - it would be fun to train together;-)

Hi all. Can I just add that Mike is very true to his word!

A while ago now (was it that long ago my toes have only just recovered lol) A few of us on here did the GSR in Portsmouth a very very very wet day in October.

Mike - having lost his weight, still stayed with me and walked the whole 10 miles with me, spurring me on and helping me along. He could have ran more of it I know he could but he still stayed with me.

He's a gent and I am eternally grateful to him for getting me round! (It would have been easy to give up in that terrential rain!).

Hope you have a great GNR and you raise as much dosh as possible - I'll lay you a bet Mike - I'll sponsor you £10 if you do it over 2:36 (my GSR Time) but £20 if you do it under! (Now that will be good going because its 3 miles extra tee hee! But I know you have spirit and will power!).

GO FOR IT - I wasn't even anywhere near my ideal weight and my legs didn't thank me for it afterwards but crossing that finish line made me enormously proud that id' managed to achieve it and managed to do it in front of my kids - who were screaming and running alongside me (walking) the last few yards!

Magic you can't beat it!
