Supersize Teens- gastric bands???

Me and my hubby took our little boy to a party today where I was good so I decided to allow myself some treats tonight and started watching supersize teens and it was sad to see that they would go for gastric bands at 14yrs old for goodness sake. One mum said it was the only option, personally i think it was the easiest option. One girl was eating sausage pizza for breakfast which was on the school menu (the school needs its brains testing). I was saying "why are you eating that its not going to do you any good", then I looked at my bag of nuts and said "why im i eating this? I dont really want it and its going to ruin my weighloss this week" so in the bin they went.

I thank the program for making me see sense. But am I the only one who thinks its mad for a child to have a band in? SW is for the whole family!

Only in America.

Not mad at all, sensible eating plan is what will work far more than a gastric band, which from what I can tell is far from an easy option. As for the parent saying it was the only option, surely not? There are far easier options - like healthy eating - hmmm Slimming World springs to mind!

When I said easier option i meant that, erm, having the band and then eating after, everything is set out for you. But getting a stroppy teen to exercise and eat the right things is going to be v v v hard work unless they are self motivating. Telling my 2yr old he cant have something is hard enough because kids go on and on and on to wear you down lol!

Sorry I meant not an easy option in the fact that it is an operation and all the risks that go with it. Bit of cross wire on my part I think Sorry!

It's sad, and tragic and so preventable.
If sensible eating was the order of the day from birth, it would not be necessary.
I do blame a lot on junk food, and the availability but it does not mean the child has to eat it constantly.

Yes I agree with you , surgery is not something to be taken lightly.

I had a 2 year old toddler at my clinic last week weighing three stone !! he came in with a biscuit in both hands. his parents say they feel mean to say no when he walks around their food shop helping himself. I pointed out they would be meaner allowing him to continue like this with the possibility of being excluding from frienship groups, being bullied, not being able to run in PE. They have agreed not to let him have free reign in the shop from now on. If this starts this early what hope have some of these children got.x

Omg, it's terrible. Teens with gastric bands... what next. That 3stone toddler is going to have problems at school if they don't buck up their ideas!! My 16month old is just over 2stone, he eats fruit, he loves it. He rarely has anything bad... and by bad I mean 1 biscuit at his Grandma's house, or frozen chicken... My lo is going to be so tall (and is already) and I hate to think people can stuff their toddlers to bursting point like that, and I get stick from HV's about whatmy LO weighs. I hope they get sorted out before that 2yr old starts to feel sad about his weight :(

Xx

For all of you who are reading this, just a reminder (and I wish someone had told me at the time) a portion is the size of your fist. This applies to children and their fist size. So if you are dishing up shepherds pie for example it should be the same size as the child's clenched fist. I used to be so proud that my daughter ate as much as me . . . how wrong I was. After years of bullying about her weight, not being able to buy trendy clothes etc she is on this journey with me now.

They need to make that more known, I only found that out through doing WW years ago. I just feel sorry for all these kids that can better the ammount their parents eat, it's not right.x

My 2 yr old loves fruit and veg and when i put his dinner out he eats the veg first, lol! I make sure he tries everything such as different fruit and veg like dragon fruit and radishes which hes tried lately. Neither of us liked the dragon fruit but we still tried it, lol! I also do allow him treats, I want him to have a balanced view of food.

I was readying in a womens mag about this women who is 25st and she wants her 3 yrold to be big like her. The amount of junk she is feeding her is insane, even i couldnt of managed it at my worst and I can pack the food away, lol! But seriously she said at 9mth old she would mash her up cheesecake and she loved it, WHATTTT??? She allows her to eat what she wants, when she wants and how much she wants. She said that she is happy at 25st and her 3yr old is happy as she is.

I THINK....her daughter is 3 for goodness sake, she does not understand what her mother is doing to her and the health implications. Also I think that deepdown her mother is lonely and unhappy with herself and by allowing her daughter to eat like this she will grow up the same and then they can eat together.

I agree, it's not the option to take at 14 years old! It's a serious decision to make at any age - surgery should NEVER be taken lightly given the risks involved.

The fact the government estimates over 50% of teens will be overweight or obese by 2050, and the fact weight loss surgery seems to be seen as the answer, it's going to strain our NHS and take money and help from others who need life saving surgery.

You can ALWAYS lose weight through diet and exercise...but a new kidney, liver etc isn't so easy.

More effort should be made to encourage other methods - look at SW - it works, it's easy and it helps in more ways than weight loss. Promoting eating groups is better than promoting severe surgery.

Just my view...

This is a subjest that is very close to my heart....because I have had a gastric band. For me, I had tried everything. The diets werent working including SW...and I was not cheating! The problem as so many of you have said already is educating your children to eat healthily. My parents couldnt afford lots of fruit and veg when I was younger, so for us, butter, lard and creamed mash potato was the norm. The band has helped in restricting the quantity of what I eat...nothing else. I still have to eat healthily, which is why I chose SW to continue that part of my diet.
I loose weight at the same rate as anyone that hasnt had a band fitted and that suits me fine.
My 3 year old Daughter eats healthily...however, she sometimes has the occasional biscuit, piece of chocolate, but not all the time and I certainly never give in to her and feel mean if I have said no to it in the first place! Lol. She knows that fruit and veg are far more important to her body to grow up. We dont mention diet, we dont mention weight loss and she never sees me weigh myself either. I dont want her to go through the same things as me.
A teenager to be given the option of a gastric band when they are still children themselves is just wrong. The parents need educating in order to pass on good eating practises to their children.

Sorry for rambling!!! Lol

Mrs V - I hope my message didn't offend...I said that weight loss is always possible through diet and clearly, it isn't!

But your story makes it more important that it isn't the first option to take. It must be used for people, like yourself, you have tried other methods first to no avail. Does that make sense? If it's something that is offered too freely, it'll get misused (as everything eventually is) and the cases that need it more will be hidden in the sea of people wanting them.

And those who use one need your determination too and maintain a healthy approach to food and wellbeing.

Just wanted to message as I didn't mean to offend if I did!

xx

Sorry Mrs V, hope I didnt offend you either. I can see that for you it was your only option after trying many different things.

At 14 there are still options for her, as she is just starting out. Plus the bit where she blended the chicken was crazy. The band means that you can only eat small portions but you still need vitamins and minerals etc from the right kinds of food. Even though she was eating less she wont be healthier inside unless her mother changes her diet or she does.

Hun...honestly no one has offended me!! I just wanted to add another side to the story.
Blending KFC is a disgusting thought! I wouldnt even entertain that idea Lol!
What I was trying to say was that for some people the gastric band is an option to control their quantity and re-educate the quality of food that they eat (which was my case), for others...well it is a get out. My consultant told me at my last appointment...."you have to work with the band, not rely on it to work its magic, because it wont on its own".
I chose SW to help me along...and do you know what...Im glad I did! I think the plan is fantastic - yes, I have to adapt it to the the quantities that only I can eat, but I love it! I would have never met you lovely people on here either!

Im not offended by anyone's comments or posts, as everyone has an opinion, myself included. If anyone wanted to ask me questions regarding the band, I have no problem in answering them either.

I'm glad its working for you :) I'm glad you chose SW too!
