sensitive subject

Hi:wavey:

I'm now in my third week of CD - and finding going to the loo very painful (if not impossible!). I've been using the fibre granuals supplied by my CDC but they seem to have made things worse. I've also been drinking plenty of water (feels like gallons). Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do to help things along?

Holding on for your responses literally:eek:

Fiber89 does keep you regular but at the start when you first change your diet regardless of diet you are more inclined to become constipated.

I found that Dulco-lax helped..after that you should settle down.

Some on here have found that Psyllium Husk work very well.

Here is a post by Russiandoll and the link to this thread on the subject.

Hiya
Psyllium husks: pure whole PH contain NO carbs and NO calories so are fine to take on and VLCD.

They're great for people with IBS as they're not abrasive like bran fibre.
Here are some links with info and where to get them online in powder form or as capsules.

Healthspan - great reputable online company.

and if you prefer the idea of capsules, Holland & Barrett sell them -here's the link

In powder form, you can make a porrige out of them by making up a shake with 300 - 350ml of very hot (not boiling water).
Pour into a bowl and sprinkle on about 2 dessertspoons of PH powder (experiment til you get a consistancy you like).
Stir briskly with a balloon whisk or fork until the lumps have gone and it's a smooth consistancy.
I sprinkle cinnamon on mine for an extra 'wintery' taste.

HTH :)

Many thanks Mini - I will pick some up tomorrow - feel much better knowing that there is something to try, without affecting the ketosis.

Dulcolax Perles do not affect ketosis (I am not sure about the other forms of dulcolax). If you are a little bit sensitive to laxatives (like me) start on 1 rather then 2, otherwise you will be......'whoa there, wheres my surf board, to ride this wave!' Sorry sick sense of humour. Angela x

Hi

I take psyillium husks and they do help keep you regular for both diarrheoa and constipation but it sounds like you need something first to get you going. I would recommend Movicol, you can buy it from chemist and it doesn't affect ketosis. It's more effective than other laxatives and much milder (no cramps etc) If you get some make sure you follow instructions and mix with right amount of water and allow to go clear before drinking.

Hope this helps

I take the husks and find them very useful in helping prevent 'total' constipation - since they also bulk the soups etc out a bit they help make packs more satisfying - but I STILL need to take laxatives at least once each week, and sometimes, twice.

Not sure why this is. Is it just me??

Hi girlygirl, its not a great idea to take laxatives a lot as they make the bowel sluggish, On a VLCD we dont go to the loo as much as we dont have as much to pass through our body, to get a bit technical, dont read if you are eating!!

When our bowels become full, it touches the walls of them, this makes them contract and therefore we need a number two, the problem with VLCD is that our bowels never really get that full, so the stuff in there doesnt make it contract as it doesnt touch the sides, then it dries up and goes hard and this is why it hurts to go to the loo, other things like medication, long term painkiller use can make this happen too. Plus the minerals in the pack can make our poo a bit harder. PH bulks everything out, and it holds loads of water so this makes everything contract again. However, if not enough water is consumed then it can feel a bit like sandpaper coming out

Can I ask how much PH you take, when I took capsules it didnt help, but when i go the powder it worked ace, but i used a fair amount, porridge, but also added it to every shake and soup I had. Made sure I had the extra water too.

The other thing you can try in movical there is a sticky on it and its supposed to get the bowels back in working order too

Hope this helps x

Thanks!

I buy the Healthspan husks - add a few teaspoonsful to each shake.

Sometimes I make the porridge but the texture can be a bit sickening so I don't do this often.

I drink tons of water and peppermint tea etc and I exercise regularly. Maybe I just have a sluggish bowel!

However!

When I cheat - and eat anything substantial for a meal - SUDDENLY the floodgates open and the husked-up u-kno-wot finally appears.

I don't recommend cheating as a cure, however!

Too true, But I think that links it back to the amount we eat on a VLCD, at least you know it works in everyday eating situations! I used to add up to 4 tablespoons to a shake, I couldnt really stomach it in soups though! I sort of messed around and got a nice chocolate readybrek type thing with mine, very filling!

Up to four tablespoons to a shake! Do you do this three times a day? I've been kinda nervous about possibly adding too much - is that possible?

I add tons to make 'porridge' but it never comes out the same, twice!

The husks are a fab addition to VLCDs, though; I couldn't manage without them.

I dont think you can take too much but sometimes I got a bit windy!!!! You must must take more water with them though, the only side effect i was aware of was not enough water, this can cause it to swell too much. Trial and error with me!

Oh yes - I know ALL about the windy bit... LOL.

Have you tried having some hot water with a bit of flavouring in it? Sometimes this can help shift the 'bunged up' feeling and also increase your water intake. I have been drinking between 3-4 litres a day and this time, so far have had no problems. When i have done CD before I was having 2-3 litres and having to take Regucol every day as well as a glycerin suppository once a week as well!

oooough....erm, off the top of my head, 200mls of water and a soup pack (not tomato) whizz up, then add 3 teaspoons of p-husks and whizz more.....onto a plate with baking paper on for 10 mins to get thick and then blast in micro for 8-10 mins. Sometimes have a wee bittie mustard with it to be very very bad.

Hmmm.

That actually sounds like a tasty pancake...

'Not the tomato' made me laugh!

Why don't CD change the recipe? I know a few peeps love it but most seem to avoid it at all costs. It's not horrible when you add a bit of Marigold or whatever, it's just too sweet. And kinda watery... for those of us raised on Heinz.

Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup... mmmmmm!

*must stop these thoughts, NOW*

I think you need to get a routine that gives you a ... ehm.. ROUTINE !!!!!!!!!!!!
For constipation - definitely Movicol is the kindest least painful 'solution'.
THEN you need to introduce fibre (common sense really but we all get caught out)!!!!
I make porridge as one of my meals at least every alternate day. Couple of dessertspoons of psyllium husks sprinkled on hot shake and whisked with a fork.I sprinkle cinnamon on top and it's actually nice and is filling.
I also add a teaspoon to soup and blend. It's not too thick but fine for eating with a spoon - I prefer tosit down at the table and eat!!!!
That's enough to keep everything working for me - but everyone is different so experiment. Good luck!

oh no!! didn't mean it like that......I go on and off the tomato...as I do with all the soups. It's just the tomato is more powdery and totally useless to make crisps/pancakes with......they end up all fluffy and odd. Fluffy crisps weren't much fun!
