Growing your own

My dad and I are thinking of starting an allotment to grow our own veg. We figured it will be good exercise, homegrown tastes better and it will mean we have lots of fresh veg on hand for when I start eating regular food again.

Does anyone else have experience of doing this, and is it worth the effort? We will have to make raised beds for my dad as he has limited mobility and that will involve a lot of heavy shovelling. But once that's done, I'm hoping it won't be too backbreaking!

i have no experience of it but it sounds like a great idea and a chance to spend some quality time with your dad

good luck with "the good life" :)

We have a very large garden and grow our own :)

Tomatoes and cucumbers tend to grow well for us but we have a greenhouse.

The carrots and beans are doing well this year too.

I'd recommend you go to the library and borrow a couple of books on it, and use the internet.

For us, it was all trial and error. It's good fun, but veggies take a LOT of watering and weeding so you must be prepared to keep it up.

We got a greenhouse last year but sowed too late so really didnt get any crops. This year we have had cucumber, courgette, tomatoes, chillies and pepper. Another thing that has been really nice is the fresh herbs we have grown. My kids have a 14 foot trampoline but it is going at the end of this season so next year we are starting to think about how to redo the garden (its not big) and a veg plot is definately on the agenda. I'm hoping to do carrots, onion, beetroot and potato.
Sorry, i'm rambling but just to finish my MIL has a very successful veg plot and i am in no doubt that everything tastes so much nicer and there is so much satisfaction in growing your own.
There are lots and lots of good books on the market, many of the celeb gardeners say that you get just as good a crop from planting in pots, i've got a good one called vegetables in a small garden. If you're interested i'll look it out and get the author etc.
Good luck with it.

My Hubby tends ours, and we have lovely things (which I can't eat yet) ! Potatoes, spring onions, garlic, green beans and fruit too.

The kids go out and pick and we ad to tea, it's really lovely not having to nip to Asda for an onion !

Cheers everyone, molly I think I might have been looking at that book in waterstones, it looked very nice.

I definitely want to give it a go. We have our names on the waiting lists at four different allotments as we speak :)
