anybody a flea expert?

i've never had cats before and have always been a bit of a dog man.moved in with girlfriend who's always had cats and now we have 2.ones 2yrs and ones 4 months. we have discovered this last month that they have fleas.the older one has obviously brought them in and now we find them on the little one. this i find quite annoying as both are reguarly wormed and flea'd with the stuff you put on the back of the neck.the little one had her first batch of injections in june and amongst those was an injection that was supposed to keep her flea free for 8 months.she has been wearing a flea collar for the last week and they're still on her.what the hell do you do? please help!

The injections don't actually stop them picking fleas up, they just stop the fleas from breeding as once they bite the cat they become infertile. Yep fleas are little *******!! Best thing I can recommend is get some frontline spray and use that on both cats, at the same time you need to get the spray for the furnishings and cats beds etc. This will kill any fleas/eggs that may be in the carpets/sofa/pet beds etc etc. If you don't do this the cats will just get reinfested again. Once sprayed with frontline, you can then use the spot on every 4 weeks. Make sure it is every four weeks, easy to forget I know. Hope that helps

Oh and the sprays and spot ons are fine for the little one now as are from 12 weeks. In my experience flea collars don't work too well!

when u are using stuff on ur carpets make sure u get the stuff that kills the egg and larva other wise it will keep infestin

Avons skin so soft!! best thing ever invented to kill and deter flea and mosquitoes. Word of mouth has spread the word, Avon will not advertise that it works as they have done no testing but Wash your dog/Cat and yourself in skin so soft and it kills off the fleas and the mozzies stay away!!

Wow I didn't know that and I'm an Avon rep lol, will have to try it. Dunno if I'd be able to bath my big cat tho, he's grumpy at the best of times

we had a cat until may this year and regularly had problems with fleas. they would start to live in the carpets and furniture and the kids and i would end up covered in bites. the cat was treated by the vet with a chemical on the back of his neck and the house would have to be treated with a very toxic spray that meant we had to close all the windows and doors and leave the house for a few hours while it did its work. the first time we did it i didnt realise that the fish would be affected and when we came back it was dead, then i read the instructions again and saw a warning. i used the flea collers and tried anything and everything suggested but never seemed to manage to stop the infestiations. i loved my cat but this summer has been so nice without the worry of feas again and i dont think ill be getting another one. good luck with your search, i hope it is more sucessful than mine was.

I've always had cats and living in the countryside they obviously have picked up fleas now and again. I now feel lucky that I've never had to go to such extremes! We always frontlined ours and it seemed to keep the fleas at bay. Unfortunately my cat has a bit of a reaction to the stuff and so we've stopped giving her anything. Luckily though she's pretty old and doesn't go out much plus we live in the middle of a village so she's not had a problem.

I have a dog and a cat and have never had a problem with fleas.

Your cats need spot on ( I use Stronghold) every 4 weeks religiously. When you buy it, there are stickers inside to put on a calendar to mark out every 4th week so you don't forget. I haven't heard of a cat not needing treatment for 8 mnths! They need to be weighed at the vet's to make sure the dosage is right for the size of the cat, then ask the vet to send reminder letters if you think you may forget.

Remember that other cats they mix with may not be wormed or flead, so it is more important that your own cats are covered.

I would never recommend buying supermarket or pet shop unknown brands either. Stronghold, Frontline or any other vet recommended spot ons are the best.

Also ask them for advice on what to use on carpets etc as some may not be strong enough, or others may be harmful to your cats.
