A NAILSEA pensioner who lost 10 stone by eating nothing for six months has tucked into his first meal.
Idris Lewis, 69, weighed 26 stone when he started a liquid diet so he would be slim enough to undergo a life-saving heart valve operation.
He consumed nothing more than six pints of water a day with two packets of a nutritional drink powder containing only 600 calories.
But after surpassing his target weight of 16 stone, he was given the go-ahead by doctors to eat his first meal yesterday.
He went to his local pub with wife Muriel, 69, and grandson David, 15, where he tucked into a 4oz piece of steamed cod, two spoonfuls of peas and a diet Coke.

Idris must eat a restricted diet of steamed or boiled fish, skinless chicken, salad and vegetables for four weeks to reintroduce his body to solid food.
But he is then looking forward to a full roast dinner – which has already been written into his diary for a month's time.
Grandfather-of-three Idris said his meal in the Moorend Spout in Nailsea was like Christmas.
His first meal was cooked especially for him, and was a far cry from the fry up he had there as his last meal before the diet started in January.
He said: "The cod tasted like no fish I have ever had before, and the peas were brilliant. I don't know what has happened to my taste buds but everything tastes much better.
"The diet Coke I had tasted so sweet, I can't believe I used to have one every day. In a few weeks' time I will be able to have a beer or a whiskey, but I am not sure I will still like the taste."
He added: "I now understand much more about how to eat healthily, so I am ready to try a normal diet again. I know I used to eat too much, and that I should avoid certain things like fatty and fried foods. I am much more disciplined now.
"This whole thing has been great for my family. I think everyone is thinking more about what they eat, hopefully my grandsons have learnt a lot too and won't eat so many sweets."
Retired civil servant Idris, who lives in Nailsea, ballooned to 26 stone on a diet of full English breakfasts, cake and beers.
But in February last year, a routine scan for a lung condition he suffers from picked up a problem with a heart valve.
Doctors ordered Idris to slim down to 16 stone ready for an operation, but by January this year he was still staring death in the face at 26st 12lb.
So his pharmacist prescribed him a drastic course of Lipotrim nutrient powder.
For the past six months Idris has not eaten a single mouthful of food and his daily diet consisted of six pints of mineral water and dissolved powder packets twice a day.
His progress has been monitored weekly by his GP and pharmacist and the pensioner is now 5lbs under his target weight.
Idris, who now weighs 15st 5lb, has been told by doctors he should be ready to undergo the operation in October.
He said: "Hopefully I will be able to have the operation before my 45th wedding anniversary – I didn't think I would see it, but now I am much more optimistic."

I saw this in the paper the other day, lovely story! Hopefully it will bring awareness to some programs that are available and emphasise they are GP monitored!!

Cant wait to be at goal!

Yes, I posted this at the time because it was good news for once! Although the paper I read it was a tiny wee bit on the paper! So nice to read the full story and a large piece as well.

He is an amazing guy, almost 70 yrs of age and can change his whole life around...waw!!!

awww thats nice :)) fair play to him

Good for him and like others have said, it's great to read some positive news about LT.

Great to see it written about accurately, emphasising the support and the refeed/reintroduction of foods (and alcohol!!)

Great job by Idris, really impressive.

His target weight seems rather high still, wonder if he'll continue after the op.
