Lidl shopping

Hello everyone, Off to Lidl tomorrow as I'm hoping to save some pennies on my SW-friendly food.

I know they are pretty cheap for fruit and veg. Does anyone know of any Lidl goodies or low syn products that I may find there?

I would especially like to know if they have any syn-free yogurts...

I love lidl but we are not near to one, so I always stop if we are out and I see one.

They do these yogurts called piano 0% and they are lovely, come in a pack of 8 and are very cheap. I treat them as free as they are fat free.There is a 0% fromage frais too in a big tub.

They also do alot of nice cold meats and hams nice on the German rye bread they do cheaply too.

Oops! Just because they're fat free doesn't guarantee they're syn free.

Lidl Pianola, Yogurt, 0% Fat, Fruit 125g pot








Over and above the fruit and vegetables Lidl do some great canned stuff. Their chopped and plum tomatoes came out top in a recent taste test of supermarket own brands. I won't go past them now especially as they're only 33p.

Their tinned spaghetti is really tasty and only 19p a tin. Also the beans which are an award winner at 33p a tin. You don't get the loads of sauce and not many beans you normally see with cheaper brands.

You'll get tinned pulses, and their passata is very reasonable as is the tomato puree. Stock up on pasta and rices. I can recommend the spaghetti (egg pasta) and thai jasmine rice. Their tuna is good at around 84p. I know you can get it cheaper but this is an almost solid block with very little brine.

I like their red pesto which is good for a quick pasta sauce at 2.5 syns a tbsp. Also can't beat them for roasted red peppers - huge jar for around £1.60. Very tasty and useful for popping into pasta sauce.

They sell a huge chunk or parmesan for around £3. I know that sounds expensive but it is huge compared to other supermarkets and will last ages. I put mine in the freezer and grate it as I need it. They also do a reduced fat mozzarella.

I also get my skimmed UHT milk there - UHT tastes much better than fresh and Lidl is cheapest.

They are fab for cheap veg. Unlike Aldi you can almost do a full shop there! Steak mince is cheap and their meat is very good. I also like their jar of roasted red peppers preserved in vinegar. About 10 peppers for £1.45. Their jasmine rice is wonderful i used to get 5 ?kg bags but they've stopped doing them, only 1kg now, but it really is fragrant.I don't go very often but I get an email from them each week (you sign up on their website) and they let you know what's on offer. Most supermarkets do this.

The thing is Circles, if I have had these one week instead of mullers it dosent make any difference whatsoever to my weightloss, if you look at the nutrional stuff its the same as a muller! I do use the common sense approach a bit and I dont think it does a great deal of harm!

The problem with Lidl's fat free yogs (I presume the ones they sell here in France are the same) is that they have sugar added. To count as syn free make sure that, as well as being fat free, there is no sugar added too.

That's fair enough if you know what you're doing and not eating them a lots but someone could easily get through 2 or 3 pots a day thinking they are free and really sabotage their weight loss.

I endorse everything others have said, and have learnt a few new ideas as well!

Especially their milk, the UHT skimmed, max 0.3% fat. It comes in 1litre packs with a SCREW TOP, and has been just 49p for ages! Hubby goes and gets 2 or 3 packs of 12 at a time - round here it normally costs 54p+ not in a screw top! Just wish the local Council collected tetra packs...

We've also bought masses of stuff from their weekly changing 'other goods' range, including digital food scales (our consultant said that she was worried that they thought that she was a junkie when she bought 6 scales for raffle prizes!!!).
