just back from India

I have just not long returned from India and had the holiday of a lifetime. I never really came across many overweight people there, which I put down to the diet, and whilst in Indian supermarket never really noticed many processed foods, like, burgers and so forth; instead there was a lot of vegetarian foods on offer, with not a chemical insight in them. So why are we exposed to so much crap? We all know that the profit motive plays a large part, but good food is cheap in India and plentiful, moreover, the Indian population are more health conscious than we are. Something to learn from.

I love Indian cuisine, but the last time I was in hospital, I got talking to a nurse about all things spicy and she told me that some of the highest cancer rates in the world were to be found in India. She mentioned bowel cancer specifically - I don't know if her sources are accurate, but google does throw up some pretty horrifying stats on cancer in the country in general (the tobacco eating habit can't help), as well as malnutrition, coronary heart disease, TB and diabetes.

A lot to do with the standard of living in poorer areas, I guess, but it does make you wonder just how healthy Indian cuisine actually is, even in its native environment.
