Calorie Advice Please

I have been on around 1000-1200 calories a day and now I have reached my goal weight I want to know if it's best to add a 100 extra calories a day each week or if it's best to go straight up to your maintenance calorie allowance. I am petrified of eating more in case I gain!

Hi Angy... similar situation with me. I was on 1300 a day and I've been slowly upping that to see if I can hit a balance for maintenance.

All personal choice, but I don't think I'd suddenly zoom up to a particular maintenance allowance, mainly because I'm not sure what exactly that is for me now! Maybe you feel the same. How about adding an extra 200 calories to your daily allowance for the first week, then another 200 the second week, then a 100 the third week... just gradually easing your way up over the course of a month and seeing what happens to your weight. It's likely you'll continue to lose a little bit until you hit the balancing point, but hopefully it'll ease you into maintenance gently and help you find the allowance for you.

Many many congratulations on the fab weight loss, by the way, you must feel wonderful!!

Thanks for your reply Iris. I will try it that way. I am considering losing another half stone past my original goal, but I need to up my calories a bit anyway. I am finding with the amount of exercise I am doing now I get quite tired with so few calories. Maybe I will aim for 1300-1400 calories for a while.

And congratulations to you to on your weightloss. It's a tremendous feeling isn't it?

It's a pretty bizarre mix of feelings all round, isn't it? Takes a while to get used to it all. Have you gone a bit bananas with the clothes shopping, too? :p

I don't exercise at all, nothing formal or timed, anyway, so I admire your discipline! You definitely do need to up the cals if you're active... the poor old body is working so hard it needs the extra or it starts to neglect skin and hair, and you can feel generally rotten and exhausted.

Good luck with the next half stone! The last little bit comes off so slowly, doesn't it? But I guess it's all good practice getting into the habit of stabilising your weight and eating patterns. A week where you can maintain definitely isn't a wasted week!

I haven't gone nuts with clothes yet. I kept all my clothes from before I gained the weight but even those are biggish on me now. I am trying to make do until I can settle at a size I am comfy at and then shop madly! But I did buy a size 8 pair of trousers and I nearly cried with joy. I have never been a size 8 in my life!

My exercise routine is a lot of yoga and some swimming with my mum dragging me to the gym on a Sunday morning. I love yoga so that's great for me. But I must admit the swim and gym hurts a bit.

Thanks for all your advice Iris, you are a little star!
